Gianluca Gaetano is set to become Atalanta’s latest signing after agreeing a €14 million deal including add-ons with Cagliari. The creative midfielder will arrive in Bergamo on Thursday to undergo his medical, paving the way for a move that signals a huge statement of intent from Atalanta and newly appointed head coach Maurizio Sarri.
For Gaetano the discovery of Atalanta was serendipitous. The 26-year-old was specifically targeted by Sari, with talks reportedly starting months earlier. According to multiple sources, including Sportitalia, Sky Sport Italia and transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, the deal has now been fully agreed, with the transfer fee amounting to €12 million upfront and an additional €2 million based on performance-related bonuses.
Gaetano’s journey to this crucial moment has been marked by steady progression through Italian football. A product of the Napoli youth system, he gained vital experience during loan spells at Cremonese and Cagliari. His performances in Sardinia convinced Cagliari to make his move permanent for €6.2 million last June.
Last season, Gaetano emerged as one of Cagliari’s standout performers, appearing in 35 matches in Serie A and the Coppa Italia. He contributed two goals and four assists, underscoring his creative influence in midfield and his ability to make a solid impact in high-pressure situations.
With his medical scheduled in Bergamo, the final formalities of the transfer are expected to be completed swiftly, allowing Gaetano to sign his contract and join Sarri’s squad ahead of the new campaign. The move not only links Gaetano to the coach who personally requested his arrival, but also underlines Atalanta’s ambition to strengthen its squad with proven Serie A talent.
All eyes will now be on Gianluca Gaetano as he prepares to take the next step in his career, with Atalanta counting on his technical quality and vision to make a decisive difference in their midfield ranks.
