It’s hard to make a pair of socks feel as good as Comme C. From design to art direction to materials, it seems the darling hosiery label has cracked the code on the most basic basics, turning a simple pair of socks into a genuinely desirable piece of cultural capital – without resorting to wild colors, fibers or textures. Its tube sock is a little prettier than old-fashioned tube socks, but also more luxurious because it’s made from super silky Egyptian cotton and knitted in Italy. Of course, the little tag on the cuff is obviously a cheeky indicator to let others know you’ve got taste. Do they last three times as long as more affordable socks? Probably not. But when I wear them, I feel a sense of care and respect – like driving a Porsche versus a beat-up Corolla.

CDLP’s range of high-end underwear has been a favorite at GQ for years, and the Scandinavian label’s socks are probably just as good. The lustrous, mercerized organic cotton is woven into a sponge-y rib weave and comes in multiple sizes for a more precise fit. Add to this a reinforced toe and heel, and you’ve got a pair of socks that will feel as comfortable as your bed after a hard day’s work.

What makes a great white sock?

Like my weird obsession with plain white tees, I’ve amassed a large collection of plain white crew socks over the decades. What started as a necessity became a borderline addiction. By my estimate, I’ve worn at least 30 different brands from Hanes to Anonymous, Adidas to Pantherella, and my feet have slipped into almost every major sock brand worth mentioning.

I’ve worn these socks with a variety of shoes, washed them in different cycles with different detergents, and, importantly, worn them until there wasn’t much left in them to wear. A good pair of socks depends on the quality of the material, construction and fit. Most good socks should have a balance of cotton with a little stretch as well as a bit of synthetic fiber for durability, moisture wicking or other performance properties. From there, the material should be woven with a seamless toe for comfort and perhaps some reinforcement at the toe and heel.

Generic socks will fit many sizes, but higher quality hosiery will have a more tailored set of sizes for a better fit. Using that criteria, we were able to choose the best plain white socks for you.
