Spy photos of Ford’s upcoming $30,000 electric pickup surfaced online last week, confirming that the vehicle the company has billed as its next “Model T moment” is on track to debut next year. Now, Ford is adding fuel to the fire with a new microsite It features a video of the pickup undergoing cold-weather testing and takes a behind-the-scenes look at its design process.
In short, the as-yet-unnamed battery-electric truck will be the first product to run on Ford’s universal EV platform, a skateboard architecture that will support many different types of vehicles beyond pickups with beds. Ford is also taking advantage of “unicasting” technology to reduce the number of parts in the final product.
In a video hosted on the site, a Ford prototype assembly worker gives us a peek at the front of the truck being bolted to the chassis, and says that in Dearborn’s 27 years of building prototypes, “nothing has gone together this smoothly.”

The Universal EV Production System, as it has been dubbed, would ideally unify front, rear and chassis/battery sections to enable more modular, efficient production. And this won’t be the only form of clever consolidation to maximize manufacturing versatility, as the wiring harness, for example, will apparently be “over 4,000 feet shorter and 22 pounds lighter” than the Mustang Mach-E’s equivalent part.
According to details shared by Ford last year, the EV will use a lithium-iron-phosphate battery and a 400-volt charging system. 400-volt systems do not charge as quickly as 800-volt, but they have the advantage of lower cost and wider charging support. The truck is also said to have the same interior volume as a Toyota RAV4 and the ability to go from 0-60 mph as fast as an EcoBoost Mustang in 4.5 seconds. Ford is building the electric motor in-house, and there will be single- and dual-motor options available – which means the cheapest, $30K trim will be a two-wheel-drive affair.
As far as the truck’s design goes, given the full camouflage and smooth appearance of the body, it appears to be Ford’s final look in its footage. Still, we can point out that the side profile has a high beltline and a comfortable rake of the windshield to reduce air resistance and improve efficiency, which is especially important for electric vehicles. The X-shaped wheels are also a nice touch.
Ford tells us to look microsite Look for an update as it completes the pickup’s development, ahead of an on-sale date in 2027 to be revealed later this year. The automaker certainly isn’t afraid to create hype with its “Model T moment” claims; We’ll just have to see if the final product lives up to them.
