FIFA clears Harry Kane of yellow card after World Cup penalty confusion

England captain Harry Kane will face Norway in Miami without the threat of suspension following widespread confusion over the yellow card he issued during the Three Lions’ recent clash with Mexico at the Estadio Azteca. Initial reports and broadcast graphics suggest Kane was cautioned after a controversial penalty incident, sparking fears the striker – who is chasing the golden boot at the World Cup 2026 – could be forced to sit out England’s crucial quarter-final.

The incident occurred in the second half when Kane fouled Mexico’s Brian Gutierrez while tackling a high ball. Referee Alireza Faghani pointed to the spot after a VAR review, and in the ensuing chaos, surrounded by players from both teams, he showed a yellow card. Kane’s name was shown in television graphics, leading to speculation that the England star forward had been booked.

However, upon closer examination it was revealed that the yellow card was actually shown to defender Marc Guhi. According to FIFA’s official match report, Guhi received a caution in the 68th minute, not Kane as initially reported. Misleading broadcast graphics were the source of the confusion, but official records have now cleared the air.

The situation was further complicated by England’s disciplinary actions. Five players had entered the match on bookings, with only Jordan Henderson’s injury ruling him out of the rest of the tournament, reducing the list of those at risk. With the clarification on Kane, only one England player remains at risk of suspension due to collecting a yellow card.

As a result, any concerns about Kane’s eligibility for the upcoming clash with Norway have been put to rest. The England camp can now focus solely on the quarter-finals, where Kane’s goalscoring ability will be crucial as the team continues their quest for World Cup glory.
