One of the most significant rider moves in recent MotoGP history is now official, and Ducati has no illusions about what it means. Ducati team manager Davide Tardozzi has openly admitted that Francesco Bagnia will be a real “problem” for the Bologna factory when the two-time world champion lines up against him at Aprilia in 2027 – a candid admission that says a lot about the respect and caution with which Ducati treats the man who became its most successful rider of all time.
Aprilia confirmed ahead of last week’s Dutch Grand Prix that it has signed Bagnaia to a four-year contract from the 2027 season, formalizing a move that has been circulating in the paddock for some time. The Italian’s future at Ducati was thrown into real doubt during the winter, when news of Pedro Acosta’s signing to the factory team first emerged, setting off a chain of events that has now culminated in Bagnaia walking away from the only manufacturer he has ever known in MotoGP.
The history is very deep. Bagnaia has been a Ducati rider for his entire premier-class career, joining Pramac in 2019 before making the move to the factory team in 2021. From there, he achieved impressive feats of back-to-back World Championships in 2022 and 2023, and during his years in red he has set a record that, statistically, makes him the most successful Ducati rider ever to compete in MotoGP. To see a rider of that stature, with that history, switch allegiance to a direct rival is no small moment for the Bologna factory.
Relations between Bagnaia and Ducati became strained during the difficult 2025 season, and the dynamics changed even further with Acosta’s arrival reshaping the factory’s plans. But Tardozzi was keen to stress that whatever competitive clashes lie ahead, the bond between Bagnaia and Ducati goes beyond a single contract decision. He explained that the Italian would remain “a good friend” and, in the manager’s words, “he will always be in our hearts” – a sentiment reserved for a rider who delivered championships and defined an era of Ducati dominance.
However, that warmth no longer blinds Tardozzi to the danger looming on the horizon. Ducati bosses are fully aware of the threat Bagnaia could pose aboard the Aprilia, which has emerged as a genuine title-winning machine in 2026, with several riders already challenging at the front. “He will be a problem for us, because we know he is a very, very fast rider,” Tardozzi admitted – the simple, honest assessment of a man who has watched Bagnia win races and championships from the other side of the garage for years.
The implications are worth considering. Aprilia, already equipped with a Trackhouse satellite operation that has produced race winners in Jorge Martin, Marco Bezzecchi and Ai Ogura and Raul Fernandez, is now adding the two-time world champion to its roster for 2027. The Noel factory is assembling a rider lineup of truly frightening depth, and Ducati – who have chosen to build their future around Acosta – must now prepare to face one of their own greatest champions. Its fiercest emerging rival.
The friend went off track. Problem on this. The Bagnaia-Ducati story is not over yet – it is entering its most complex and compelling chapter yet.
