Ducati’s sporting director, Mauro Grassilli, has revealed that discussions are underway about enlisting Maverick Viñales as a MotoGP test rider for the 2027 season. This development comes as the ten-time Grand Prix winner faces an uncertain future on the grid after his exit from KTM, following a breakdown in relations with the Austrian manufacturer.
Viñales, who will not compete as a rider next year, has recently been linked to Ducati as a potential testing asset. The speculation intensified after Viñales was spotted meeting with Ducati Team Manager Davide Tardozzi in the paddock, though Tardozzi initially downplayed these talks during the Indonesian GP, emphasizing a longstanding good rapport with the Spaniard.
At the Australian Grand Prix, Grassilli confirmed
However, at the Australian Grand Prix, Grassilli confirmed that Ducati is seriously considering Viñales to complement their current test rider, Michele Pirro. “We really appreciate Maverick,” Grassilli told Sky Italy. “It’s no secret that we’re looking for a test rider to partner [Michele] Pirro. We’re talking about it, but there’s nothing yet.” The current secondary test rider, Nicolo Bulega, is set to move into a race seat with VR46 in 2027, leaving a vacancy in Ducati’s testing programme.
Viñales himself remains cautious but open about the prospect, prioritizing recovery from his shoulder injury before making any commitments. Speaking in Indonesia, he noted, “Somehow, I don’t want to disappear from MotoGP next year. I have to find a way to stay connected to this world, but right now my priority is to recover my shoulders.” He further explained that his poor pace at Phillip Island, a circuit where he usually excels, underscores that his physical condition is not yet optimal: “If I’m slow on a circuit like Phillip Island, where I can normally ride blindfolded and be fast, it means something’s wrong.”
Viñales expressed optimism about his racing future, stating, “Once my shoulders are back in order, I’ll be able to be very fast again. I have to evaluate the opportunities to stay connected to this environment and see if I can return to racing in the following years.” His comments suggest a willingness to embrace a test rider role as a pathway to remain active within MotoGP, potentially keeping the door open for a comeback.
As Ducati moves forward with its search
As Ducati moves forward with its search for a test rider to pair with Pirro, Viñales stands as a strong candidate to fill the gap left by Bulega’s promotion. This possibility could offer the Spaniard a crucial lifeline to maintain his presence in the paddock and potentially fuel a future return to competition.
