June 10, 2026, was an important date for the world of bodybuilding, as it marked 25 years since the passing of the great Mike Mentzer – the former Mr. Universe who influenced many athletes and fans with his philosophical approach to iron pumping. To pay tribute to his friend, six-time Mr. Olympia, Dorian Yates shared on Instagram how Mike Mentzer would motivate fellow bodybuilders to achieve maximum results. And, as he explained, Mentzer’s vision lives on today.
“I had seen Mike’s training stuff long before I met him and I was impressed,” Dorian Yates said in a touching tribute shared via Instagram. “He was an interesting guy and incredibly intelligent. With Mike, it went beyond his physique, although his physique was incredible – especially with the thickness of the muscles; big forearms and calves. In the end it turned out we shared those qualities. Plus, he had that strong mustache that was unmatched!”
Who was Mike Mentzer?
Michael John Mentzer (1951 to 2001), was a distinguished amateur and professional bodybuilder who achieved a perfect score of 300 in the heavyweight division at the 1978 Mr. Universe and 1979 Mr. Olympia. He retired from active competition in 1980 and was inducted into the IFBB Hall of Fame.
Based on the teachings of fitness pioneer, Arthur Jones, Mentzer began experimenting with low-volume, high-intensity training, creating his popular “Heavy Duty” training regimen. A method that many bodybuilders still use today.
Mike Mentzer’s courses were considered legitimate because their perfect scores proved that he led by example. It was Mentzer who introduced Dorian Yates to this high-intensity approach in the 90s, which helped him earn. Six consecutive Sandow trophies between 1992 and 1997.
How Mike Mentzer influenced Dorian Yates’ ‘Blood and Guts’ method
“What I read from him impressed me,” Yates said in his tribute. “And, although I was not into philosophy at the time, I would love to converse with them now that I have matured mentally, physically and philosophically.” For the elder Briton, Mentzer’s perspective on bodybuilding was a true eye-opener. “Mentzer asked the question: ‘Am I training a certain way because of habit and pressure to conform, or am I doing everything I can to figure out the best methods of bodybuilding to achieve maximum results?’ Being around an independent thinker like Mike was a great source of energy and inspiration for me, especially since I was also a rebel who went against the rules.”
Yates developed his own high-intensity, low-volume method known as “Blood and Guts” and says he ranks his training sessions with Mike Mentzer as “the most focused and brutal” of his career. The results speak for themselves.
“In all my meetings with him, he came across as a very intelligent and compassionate person,” recalls Yates, who accepts that no one is perfect. “I want to say that Mike suffered from mental health issues, which at the time were probably not as well recognized or taught about as they are now. I think it’s important to mention this and recognize men’s mental health.”
Mentzer’s influence in crafting a brilliant body of work continues to influence those who continue to read his work. “He had a big influence on me,” shared Yates, who went from reading Mentzer’s teachings to working with the man himself. “He probably didn’t know how much he was impacting people around the world, but hopefully I could pay it forward,” the man known as The Shadow offered. “I’m seeing more and more photos and videos of Mr. Heavy Duty online, which is great to see.”
