Historical epics don’t come around often, especially when they pair one of Hollywood’s most respected actors with a story as ambitious as Hannibal. That’s one reason why Denzel Washington’s upcoming Netflix film has generated so much interest early on. Rather than another crime thriller or action sequel, the Oscar winner was set to take on one of the greatest military leaders in history. Now Hannibal has suffered another setback, and this has put the entire project in doubt.

Why did Netflix stop the Hannibal movie?
Netflix halted pre-production in June 2026 after the budget ballooned to more than $200 million, a figure that would have made Hannibal one of the streamer’s most expensive productions to date, with filming set for Italy this summer.
Timing is the weird part. Fuqua is fresh off the Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, which grossed over $980 million on a $155 million budget. Even coming from the director of one of the year’s biggest hits wasn’t enough to push Netflix’s ambitious Hannibal project forward.
Why was Hannibal such a big deal?
This was a rare incident. Denzel stars in the lead role, a renowned African general at the center of a global epic, with Fuqua directing their sixth film together, and Gladiator writer John Logan working on the script. Big budget history rarely looks like this.

Is Hannibal officially dead on Netflix?
Netflix has not officially canceled the film, so Richardson’s character portrayal remains “effectively dead” rather than the studio’s announcement, although no revival plans have been made public.

Another studio could always step in, but the $200 million price tag is too big a deal for anyone. In the meantime, no one is waiting. Lionsgate is rapidly working on a Michael sequel for Fuqua, and Denzel has Here Comes the Flood with Robert Pattinson.
