Cristiano Ronaldo creates history as Portugal beats Croatia in Toronto World Cup thriller

Cristiano Ronaldo made World Cup history in Toronto as Portugal defeated Croatia 2-1 in a dramatic match in the round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Toronto has hosted its share of major sports nights, but this one had a different kind of energy.

On Thursday night, Portugal and Croatia brought the World Cup knockout stage to town, leading to a tense, emotional match that featured a late winner, a historic Ronaldo moment and an eventual VAR decision.

Croatia scored the first goal through Ivan Perisic in the 53rd minute, putting Portugal under pressure and giving the match the kind of lead on which Croatia have built their tournament reputation. For a moment, it looked as if another serious Croatian performance might be enough to push them through.

Then Ronaldo replied.

In the 68th minute, the Portuguese captain stepped up to the penalty spot and scored the goal that had been missing from his World Cup resume for a long time. This was his first career goal in a World Cup knockout match, and at the age of 41, it also made him the oldest player to score a goal in the knockout stage of the tournament.

For a player already associated with countless records, this still felt important. In what could be his final World Cup, Ronaldo added another historic chapter to a career that continues to push the limits of longevity.

But Ronaldo alone did not win Portugal’s night.

After repeated efforts by Croatia, Goncalo Ramos provided the decisive moment in stoppage time, rising above the defense to score the winner in the 94th minute. The goal sent Portugal’s supporters into celebration and brought the team one step closer to advancing to the tournament.

The drama did not end here. Croatia thought they had equalized in the final moments when Josko Guardiol looked to score, but after a VAR review, the goal was ruled offside.

Just like that, Portugal was crossed.

The win was also a memorable World Cup moment for Toronto. With large Portuguese and Croatian communities in the Greater Toronto Area, the match felt very local despite being part of a global tournament. The atmosphere in and around the stadium reflected this, making the night much more than just a neutral-site fixture.

The defeat was a painful exit for Croatia. Luka Modric, still one of football’s most admired midfielders, shared a moment with Ronaldo after the final whistle, realizing that the match would have marked the end of an era for one of the game’s great international careers.

For Portugal, the focus now turns to what happens next.

The win sets up a blockbuster Round of 16 matchup with Spain on Monday, July 6 in Dallas. This is one of the biggest fixtures of the tournament so far, with Portugal now facing a big test against a Spanish team who have looked strong in the knockout stages.

Portugal escaped from Toronto. Now, the path has become even more difficult.

Ronaldo created history. Ramos made the difference. And Toronto got a World Cup night it will never forget.
