For several days, thousands of Indian cockroaches have been marching under the banner of the Janata Party.
The Guardian’s South Asia correspondent explains Helen Pidd Protestors are again claiming a backlash after the Chief Justice of India reportedly called unemployed youth ‘cockroaches’ and ‘parasites’. His anger erupted after lakhs of students were forced to retake exams following the leak of exam papers. These scams have also been linked to dozens of suicides in recent years.
Since then, the movement has gained momentum with protests against corruption and unemployment and demands for the resignation of at least the education minister.
This is perhaps the biggest challenge for the Narendra Modi government in years. But will this week’s concessions be enough to keep the cockroach movement off the streets?
