Christian Pulisic faces harsh backlash after USMNT’s World Cup loss to Belgium
Christian Pulisic has become the focus of intense criticism after the United States’ humiliating 4-1 defeat to Belgium, ending their World Cup run on home soil. Despite entering the tournament as the USMNT’s undisputed star and “Captain America”, Pulisic’s campaign was hampered by injuries, ineffective performances, and conspicuous absences from the scoresheet, adding to the disappointment after the shock defeat.
The USMNT’s hopes ended on Monday night with a series of defensive lapses – including a costly mistake by goalkeeper Matt Freese that gave Belgium a third goal – leading to misery. Yet it is Pulisic, considered the driving force of the team, who has drawn harsh scrutiny from the football community and pundits alike.
Former USWNT icon Carli Lloyd minced no words in her post-match assessment of Pulisic’s performance. “You want some big players to step up in big moments and to be honest I was a little disappointed with Christian Pulisic,” Lloyd said. “I think, whether he wants to be the star of this team or not, we didn’t see a lot from him in this particular game and really the whole World Cup.” Lloyd’s candid comments echo the prevailing sentiment that Pulisic failed to deliver when it mattered most.
FS1 analyst Nick Wright drew sharp criticism on social media, targeting Pulisic’s decision to skip the Gold Cup in preparation for the World Cup and his ineffective performances throughout the tournament. Wright highlighted the weight of expectation on the 27-year-old’s shoulders, declaring, “It’s terrible for a man widely regarded as the greatest player in the history of our country to not play in the biggest tournament of his life.”
Journalist Josina Anderson joined the chorus, suggesting that the USMNT should have an “honest conversation” about Pulisic’s persistent turnover issues, especially after a poor first-half performance against Belgium in which he lost the ball more than any other player on the pitch.
Statistically, Pulisic’s World Cup was extremely disappointing. He failed to score in any of his four appearances, registering only one assist and four shot attempts. Troubled by injuries, he withdrew at halftime in the opening match against Paraguay due to a calf problem, missed the subsequent clash with Australia, and was only a substitute in the group stage final against Turkey. Their only full match was against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The campaign ended with Pulisic suffering a fresh ankle injury against Belgium, which forced his early departure. “I completely twisted my ankle and my knee in the same game,” Pulisic told reporters after the loss. “I mean, whatever. I have time to relax. This is an unfortunate way to end it.”
Despite his struggles with fitness and form, criticism has been constant. With the USMNT’s World Cup journey coming to an end and criticism of their talisman, Pulisic’s leadership and influence are sure to be debated.
