Carlos Sainz has handed Williams a stern ultimatum, warning the team to “wake up” as he faces the harsh reality of a wobbly 2026 Formula 1 campaign and weighs up his future with the prestigious British outfit. After Williams suffered another disappointing performance at the Belgian Grand Prix, Sainz did not hold back in his assessment, making it clear that the team’s current performance fell well short of both his expectations and his own historical standards.
The Spaniard, who joins Williams in 2024 following the high-profile signing of Lewis Hamilton by Ferrari, was expected to lead a new era for the Grove-based team. Despite early promise and two podium finishes in his first season with Williams in 2025, Sainz now finds himself battling an overweight and underdeveloped FW48 as the 2026 regulations highlight the team’s shortcomings.
Speaking to DAZN, Sainz was leaving no stone unturned: “I find it hard to believe that we will get out of this situation this year,” the 31-year-old said at Spa, as reported by Toyota Motor. “Unfortunately, the car is not working well; it is just the way it is – we need to improve. We are facing a lot of problems; as a team, we know we are not performing to the standard we should or are not meeting expectations.”
Sainz underlined his frustration with a clear message in his native Spanish: “Hey que espabilar, as we say in Spain,” urging Williams to wake up and provide the progress needed to compete at the front.
Williams’ struggles were compounded by the fact that team principal James Walls admitted that the winter development program was inadequate, leaving the team behind under the latest technical regulations. Even with the introduction of the ‘B car’ and new chassis, Sainz was candid about the lack of meaningful progress: “To be completely honest this year, even though we have the ‘B car’, a new chassis… our new chassis is not as good as the progress other teams are making. I find it hard to believe that we will be able to get out of it this year,” he commented.
Looking ahead, Sainz’s outlook remains safe. “I think we are designing next year’s car to be more competitive because we failed with this year’s car,” he admitted, highlighting the urgent need for change at the team.
With Sainz’s contract at stake and Williams in danger of losing their key driver, the pressure on Grove is increasing. Sainz’s uncompromising assessment leaves no doubt: unless Williams can rapidly change course, the team’s ambitions – and their hold on one of the grid’s most sought-after talents – are in jeopardy.
