NRLA podcast: Budget special and rental cost index

With the shock news that landlords will pay an extra 4 percent tax on property income from April next year, we look at the impact this will have on you and your businesses.

Our expert guests discuss the ongoing tax raids on the sector from successive Governments and – with almost 80% of landlords telling us they are worse off now than they were five years ago – the impact this latest tax rise is likely to have on the provision of homes to rent.

Later in the show we are joined by a leading economist and private rented sector expert who has carried out a major piece of research on behalf of us here at the NRLA on the true cost of being a landlord, covering everything from tax and borrowing to maintenance costs.

Meet the guests

Richard, who is flyng solo this month, is joined by Louisa Sedgwick, managing director of mortgages at Paragon Bank and Meera Chindooroy, our deputy director for campaigns, public affairs and policy.

They unpack the announcements made on Wednesday and what they mean for you.

This includes the headline tax rise and other announcements that will impact you, including the latest on Making Tax Digital and building safety.

They are joint by Chris Walker, director and economist at ChamberlainWalker Economics who has developed our new Rental Cost Index, laying bare the real cost of being a landlord and how that has changed over time.

Set to be published in the coming weeks this piece of work will be a central pillar of our campaigns work going forward.
