Nevo is designed in the best possible way
Braun’s biggest hardware upgrade isn’t one you’ll notice while shaving, but it’s the reason the Nevo will survive years of falls, travel, and daily use.
The biggest engineering upgrade is the body itself. Instead of making the housing from seven separate pieces like the Series 9, Braun turns the Nevo’s stainless steel housing into a one-piece “unibody.” The result is an extremely thin 0.55mm frame that is quite sturdy and feels exceptionally solid in the hand. Translation: This thing is basically drop-proof.
“Nobody ever had the crazy idea of taking water and putting it into a form and creating shaver housings from that process,” Braun industrial designer and communications director Benjamin Wilson told me. “The material actually becomes more compressible, and it becomes even stronger than before.” At its Frankfurt launch, he parked a 1936 Auto Union car on top of a Nevo to prove the point.
Everything on its basic face is laser cut, with a barely there PVD coating giving it a smooth but durable finish. Amidst all these upgrades, Braun wisely resisted re-inventing ergonomics. It feels very similar to the Series 9 in the hand, which I think is exactly what longtime Braun users will want.
It gives you a closer shave with fewer passes
The Nevo’s biggest performance upgrade is its new AirTouch foil shaver head. Instead of the smooth finish found on most foil shavers (including the Series 9), it has a fine micro-textured surface that glides more easily over the skin. The difference is especially noticeable around the neck and other wrinkle-prone areas, where foil shavers can drag and force additional passes.
Compared to the Series 9, I need less frequent passes to get the same clean shave, and my skin looks noticeably calmer. Nevo does not completely eliminate the burning sensation. I still encountered some razor bumps when I pressed too hard during my first few shaves, but once I switched to a lighter touch and slower strokes, it provided one of the smoothest foil shaves I’ve ever had.
Braun also upgraded everything below the foil. The Nevo has 250 diamond-sharp cutting edges, more blades below the surface and even sharper edges than its predecessor. As is a high-tech shaving standard, its motor adjusts up or down to suit denser or patchier mustaches.
