Bill Gates has allegedly given clean chit to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei saying that they are not the problem. Instead, he emphasizes AI as the most profound technology ever for both good and bad outcomes. Shared by AI researcher @MalayAhmadas a podcast, a video clip shows Bill Gates advocating skepticism toward overhyped claims about AI surpassing all prior advances.
In the clip, Gates is asked if “a bunch of young CEOs building huge companies” are going “the right way”, and whether he thinks “they have the right intentions?”. To this, Gates replied saying:“Our problem today is not in the industry. Our problem is not that Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, Satya Nadella, Sundar Pichai don’t understand that there are some grave challenges here”.“I talk less to Elon than other people,” he continued adding “but even his public statements about summoning the devil are exactly what we’re discussing here.”Gates further stated that “When somebody comes along and says all other previous technology advances are trivial compared to this one, people should have a high degree of skepticism about that.”Bill Gates says AI is the most profound tech ever inventedDuring the podcast, Bill Gates called AI as the most profound technology ever invented, both in terms of good and bad.”But I’m here saying, with whatever credibility I have, absolutely this is the most profound technology ever invented, both in terms of good and in terms of bad,” Gates said adding “I’m not financially motivated on this.
I’m suggesting some precautions and safeguards are absolutely needed.”In September earlier this year, Gates sent a warning saying that no government in the world is prepared for the sweeping changes artificial intelligence will bring. In an interview with Reuters, Gates said, “I don’t think any government is nearly as deep on this as they have to be.” He cautioned that AI poses risks to jobs, cybersecurity, and even addiction to AI companions, urging leaders to act before it is too late.
Gates likened the arrival of AI to a disaster film scenario and feels that its appears to be like a disaster movie that no one has prepared for.“There’s all sorts of movies where some aliens are coming, and magically the US and China and everybody comes together to solve the problem. AI is kind of like this alien intelligence. It’s here, and we better do like it shows in those movies,” said Gates. You use AI every day.
