Something remarkable is happening in MotoGP, and its name is Ai Ogura. With a brilliant second place at the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring, the superfile Trackhouse Aprilia rider has done what seemed unthinkable at the start of this season – he has moved up to second in the MotoGP World Championship standings, and has done so on the strength of pure, undeniable talent.
This growth has been tremendous and, importantly, it has been earned. Ogura crossed the line at the Sachsenring just 1.996 seconds behind race winner Marc Márquez, and competed against the King of the Ring on a circuit where no one was able to touch him. This follows his brilliant first MotoGP win at Assen just a fortnight ago, where he dispatched his own teammate Raul Fernandez and factory Aprilia rider Jorge Martin to claim a historic win. Two rounds. A win and second place. And now, second place in the World Championship.
The trajectory is indeed frightening for their rivals. Ogura’s late race speed has become the stuff of paddock legend, with his unorthodox riding style – the upper body dramatically low while the bike remains comparatively upright – allowing him to preserve tire life in a way that no one on the grid can compare to. George Martin described the experience of following him as unnerving, saying that he seemed to crash at every corner. Raul Fernandez issued a clear warning to the Championship field: beware of him.
He was right to be worried.
What makes Ogura’s rise to second place in the standings even more fascinating is how he got there. This is not a rider who has climbed the table due to the misfortune of others alone – although Marco Bezzecchi’s collarbone injury and forced absence, and Fabio Di Gianantonio’s non-finish at the Sachsenring, have certainly opened the door. This is a rider who has been really fast, consistently strong and absolutely ruthless in the closing stages of races where his rivals have faded. They solved the qualifying weakness that was costing them at the start of the season, and once they started lining up at the front, results followed immediately.
Meanwhile, Trackhouse continues to defy every expectation placed on it. Raul Fernandez completed the podium in third place at the Sachsenring, giving the US team another double-podium and confirming that this is no longer a daring satellite operation punching above its weight. This is a real leading team, and in Ogura it has a rider who poses one of the most serious threats to the 2026 World Championships.
George Martin is still leading. Marc Márquez has been working hard recently, delivering a perfect Sachsenring weekend of pole, sprint win and Grand Prix win. Bezzecchi is going into surgery. Di Giannantonio has just seen a huge opportunity slip away.
And in the middle of all that chaos sits Ai Ogura – cool, talented, and now second in the MotoGP World Championship.
From the land of the rising sun, a genuine title contender has emerged. With changes in championships comes the summer break, and when racing resumes, the entire paddock will be watching one man more closely than ever.
Be careful of Ai Ogura. Because he is coming to everything on this evidence.
