Bestselling author Martha MacCallum to discuss ‘The Book of Valor’
The annual Thomas H. Quinn Speaker Series will also feature Medal of Honor recipient U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Patrick Brady, who is profiled in MacCallum’s book.
In her forthcoming book, New York Times bestselling author Martha MacCallum explores American history through stories of valor, from the perseverance of four surviving Mayflower women to the courage of military service members under fire.
MacCallum will discuss “The Book of Valor: America’s Story of Survival, Gallantry & Grace” with retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Patrick Brady, a Medal of Honor recipient featured in the book, during the Thomas H. Quinn Speaker Series at the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business. Ken Heckel, the Sergeant John F. Crowley Director of Military and Veterans Affairs at Notre Dame, will moderate the session.
The discussion will take place from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, in Mendoza’s Jordan Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. No registration or tickets are required, but seating is limited.
Following the discussion, MacCallum will sign books from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Notre Dame Hammes Bookstore on the Notre Dame campus.
Told through first-person narratives, “The Book of Valor” explores how Americans across generations have confronted fear and made sacrifices for others. Its subjects include Civil War officer Joshua Chamberlain, Mother Cabrini and Brady. The book will be released Nov. 10 by Harper.
Brady earned the Medal of Honor for his actions on Jan. 6, 1968, when he repeatedly flew through dense fog and enemy fire near Chu Lai, South Vietnam, to rescue wounded soldiers. Flying three helicopters over the course of the day, he evacuated 51 seriously wounded men. During two tours in Vietnam, he flew more than 2,000 combat missions and evacuated more than 5,000 wounded.
MacCallum is the anchor and executive editor of Fox News’ “The Story with Martha MacCallum.” She has covered presidential and midterm elections for the network since 2004. Before joining Fox News, she reported for CNBC and worked as a reporter and producer for Wall Street Journal Television.
The speaker series honors Thomas H. Quinn, a Notre Dame alumnus and former chair of Mendoza’s Business Advisory Council. Quinn earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Notre Dame in 1969. A football monogram winner, he was a member of the University’s 1966 national championship team.
Quinn was a managing partner of the private investment firm The Jordan Company and served on its investment and management committees. He also was president and chief operating officer of Chicago-based Jordan Industries Inc. He died April 29, 2016, at age 68.
The series is sponsored by Notre Dame alumnus and trustee John W. “Jay” Jordan II, Quinn’s college roommate, longtime friend and business partner.
