key takeaways:

  • Ava and Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems announced an agreement to develop an active safety system for Class 8 trucks.
  • The program targets future mass-produced vehicles in the North American market, with approximately 300,000 new Class 8 trucks sold annually.
  • Ava said the effort advances the mass production of lidar-based Level 2 and higher driver assistance systems for commercial vehicles.

Ava and Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems have agreed to develop an active safety system for Class 8 trucks that will integrate Ava’s 4D lidar sensors and perception software with Bendix collision mitigation technology, the companies announced June 16.

According to a release, the program is aimed at future mass-production vehicles and will bring Ava’s perception platform into Bendix’s next generation active safety and collision mitigation systems.

The collaboration targets a commercial vehicle market in which approximately 300,000 new Class 8 trucks are sold annually in North America. Bendix Fusion, the company’s flagship advanced driver assistance system, is available on most major Class 8 original equipment manufacturer platforms and can provide a path to widespread deployment of lidar-based sensing in production trucks.

The companies have drawn up this agreement as part of a broader shift in the use of lidar technology, extending beyond higher levels of autonomy to driver assistance systems aimed at improving active safety performance.

“We are excited to expand our work with Ava through this program as we continue to advance safety technologies for commercial vehicle fleets,” said Mike Tober, Chief Technology Officer, Bendix.

Ava said the effort is a step toward mass production of lidar-based Level 2 and higher driver assistance systems for commercial vehicles.

Mina Rezk, co-founder and chief technology officer of Ava, said that combining Ava’s 4D lidar with Bendix’s safety platform can help deliver lidar-based systems for large-scale commercial fleets.
