The Special Operations Combatives Program (SOCP) is a realistic combat system created for special operations forces in the Army. It focuses on close combat skills which are useful, especially when wearing all your gear. Greg Thompson, who founded and developed the SOCP program, collaborated on the design of the benchmark SOCP Dagger. I was sent the Benchmark SOCP Dagger for review, and despite having trained with it and evaluated it fairly, it won’t affect how honestly I share my opinion. Benchmark did not have a chance to preview this review prior to its publication.
When Benchmark contacted me and asked me if I wanted to review their SOCP knife, I said something like, “Sure, but I’m no blade combat expert and I doubt I’d get much use out of this product”, but said yes anyway. So the SOCP lay in the drawer for most of 2 months. Then last summer, I got some excellent knife training in Florida, and it completely changed the way I look at combat knives like the SOCP. Before this, I had seen knives mostly as tools. But after practicing the techniques, how to hold it, how to take it out, and how to use it in the real world, I really started to appreciate a dedicated defensive knife like the SOCP. So, upon returning home I was eager to test the benchmark SOC Dagger.

Design and first ideas
When I took the SOCP out of its sheath I was immediately impressed, this is a serious knife for self defense. The skeletonized construction makes it incredibly light at just 2.2 ounces, so you can carry it for long periods of time without really noticing. The finger ring is a key to the tactical implications and it locks the knife firmly in your hand during very stressful situations and enables quick, confident movement, knowing you will not lose your fighting tool.
The double-edged blade is strong and suitable for use. It’s built to push and pierce, which is what you want from a knife, especially for defense. The 440C steel holds a good edge and isn’t difficult to care for, even though I prefer sharpening traditional blades. I really like the overall dimensions, it’s small enough to be carried without drawing attention (in the boot, inside the waistband, or on a plate carrier) but still large enough to be effective when needed. It also looks very nice. Its streamlined, strategic shape and all-black finish give it a serious, professional look to match its intended purpose.
Self Defense Training and How Well It Works
After my Florida training last summer, I better understood how to actually use a knife like this. The SOCP dagger feels like a natural part of your hand. Because of the shape and finger ring, it feels natural and safe to practice holding. Used in a reverse grip (the main way to hold this knife), it is great for defending yourself at close range, controlling one’s movement, and attacking.
What’s most noticeable is how well it works with larger movements when you’re under pressure. In a real self-defense program, delicate movements are impossible. The SOCP is built to work with – it comes out fast, stays firmly in your hand, and is effective even when your adrenaline is flowing. The sheath is also well designed, with multiple ways to attach it so you can move it where you need it for faster access.

The Benchmark SOC Dagger is one of those items that you start to value more the more you practice with it. This is not a knife for general tasks or anything – it is a specific weapon for self-defense, designed by one of the best in the field for the worst situations. It has everything a modern fighting knife should have: it’s small, light, safe to hold, and really good for defense. My time during blade training in Florida showed me how valuable a tool designed for a specific purpose is, and the SOCP provided exactly what I was looking for. Whether you’re in law enforcement, the military, or a civilian who is prepared and takes self-defense seriously, you should seriously think about this dagger.
