The inaugural RUN X World Treadmill Championship launches Friday, with 400 fitness centres across 20 countries set to host the opening qualifying phase of the new global competition.
Developed by World Athletics and fitness tech company Technogym, RUN X is a 5K competition that allows runners to record certified performances on connected treadmills and potentially advance to a live world final.
The launch comes amid growing interest in treadmill running at the elite level. American marathoner Vinny Mauri has attracted attention for doing most of his training on a Planet Fitness treadmill. He won the Glass City Marathon in April in 2:05:54 (the fastest marathon debut by an American), and later finished 10th at the Chicago Marathon (2:06:45).
Treadmills are having a moment
Mauri is not announced as a RUN X competitor, but his success is a reminder that treadmill running can be a valuable part of training.
The championship features a total prize pool of US$100,000, with awards for the leading competitors. World Athletics will also provide wild-card entries to the respective national federations of the overall male and female champions, giving them the opportunity to compete in the 5K at the 2027 World Athletics Road Running Championships in Yangzhou, China.
Unlike traditional road races, the RUN X removes unpredictable variables such as weather and terrain, which allows participants to race under standardized conditions. It is also designed to welcome runners of all abilities.
How it works
The qualification phase runs from Oct. 23, 2026, to Jan. 24, 2027. Runners can complete their official 5K at participating RUN X centres, where performances are certified. The competition then moves into its regional phase, scheduled for Jan. 30 to Feb. 28, 2027.
Successful runners will progress to the world final, where the leading men and women will compete for the inaugural world treadmill titles. The finals are scheduled for March 20–21, 2027, at Technogym Village in Cesena, Italy.
A different kind of race
World 10,000m champion Jimmy Gressier and American distance runner Sara Hall are ambassadors for RUN X, and are helping promote the competition across the running community. RUN X reflects a broader effort by World Athletics to expand running competitions beyond traditional racing formats.
