Spotify has introduced Memberships, a new feature enabling podcast creators to offer exclusive content and experiences directly to their most engaged listeners.
This development allows creators to build recurring revenue streams within the Spotify platform, giving them more control over how they monetise their shows and interact with their audiences.
Memberships was previewed at Spotify’s Investor Day earlier this year and is now rolling out across 34 markets. The feature is designed to be accessible, with eligibility requirements set so that more creators can participate.
To qualify, shows must be hosted on Spotify
To qualify, shows must be hosted on Spotify for Creators or Megaphone, have at least 100 consumption hours, 100 listeners or viewers, and three published episodes.
Fans can discover and join a Membership directly from a podcast’s Spotify page. The process is streamlined: listeners can subscribe, pay, and access exclusive content with just a few taps.
This makes it easier for fans to support their favourite creators and gain access to benefits such as bonus episodes, fewer ads, early access, and exclusive audio or video content.
Creators can also offer multiple tiers and pricing
Creators can also offer multiple tiers and pricing options, tailoring the experience to their audience.
Spotify is providing built-in tools to help creators grow their Memberships. These include targeted promotions, free trials, and analytics to help creators understand how listeners convert to paying members.
Additional community features, such as member badges and welcome clips, will be available soon.
Memberships offers creators a new revenue stream in addition to advertising, the Spotify Partner Program, and other monetisation options. Creators retain 90% of the revenue generated from Memberships.
Spotify says Memberships is part of its broader strategy to help creators build sustainable businesses: “We’re continuing to prioritise creator choice: alongside Memberships, Spotify Open Access allows creators who manage subscriptions through other platforms to bring their paid content to Spotify.”
