This $1.3 million electric hypercar can stick to the ceiling like a bug

The McMurtry Spirling (that’s spear-ling) is unlike virtually any other car in existence. It can stick to the ceiling like an insect. Considering that you can spend upwards of $3 million on something like a Koenigsegg, the $1.3 million asking price for the brand’s production version, the McMurtry Spirling Pure, almost seems like a bargain of sorts.

McMurtry’s two spiraling underbody fans can spin up to 23,000 rpm, pumping air out the back of the single-seat, track-ready hypercar. The downforce generated is actually greater than the car’s weight, meaning it can literally absorb itself onto surfaces.

Despite looking similar to the test car in the video below, the new Pure Edition is actually new. McMurtry says the car’s parts are 95% new. The changes are numerous, including a new, larger 100-kilowatt-hour battery pack. To accommodate this, the wheelbase of the car increases by almost eight inches.

A new carbon fiber body also means it fits motorsports regulations in more places – important when the car is not road legal. Other updates include headlights, a second door, and a new rear wing design that sits atop the “trunk” with enough room for your race helmet.

The cockpit will actually fit perfectly only one person – the owner – due to its custom-molded bucket seats. Air conditioning is optional.

A set of new Helix Drive motors send a massive 986 horsepower to the rear wheels. What’s more, the wing’s weight of less than 3,000 pounds means the EV will accelerate to 60 mph in just 1.6 seconds. The total downforce output from the fan system, which pulls the car on the road, is approximately 4,400 pounds. The Sparling Pure will reach a top speed of 190 mph.
