Julian Alvarez beats Switzerland in extra time to send Argentina into World Cup semi-finals

Julian Alvarez produced a brilliant performance in extra time to take Argentina through to the semi-finals, overcoming formidable ten-man Switzerland in a dramatic clash that will be remembered for its ups and downs and decisive moments. With just eight minutes remaining in extra time, Álvarez broke the deadlock with a sensational right-footed strike from 25 yards, firing the ball beyond Gregor Köbel into the top left corner, sparking wild celebrations among the Argentina faithful.

Argentina looked to be on course for victory early on when Alexis McAllister headed home Lionel Messi’s corner to give his side a vital lead inside the opening ten minutes. The move, executed with clinical simplicity, saw McAllister out-jump Briel Embolo and Djibril Sove at the near post, send a looping header past Coble and provide Argentina with a platform to control the tempo of the game.

However, Switzerland refused to be intimidated. Dan Ndoye emerged as the Swiss danger man, constantly harassing Argentina’s backline and eventually scoring the equalizer midway through the second half. After combining well with Ricardo Rodriguez, Ndoye passed the ball to Emiliano Martínez, bringing the Swiss level and injecting new confidence into Murat Yakin’s side.

Lionel Messi, once the talisman, probed relentlessly but found himself caught by Switzerland’s disciplined defensive structure and Kobel’s sharp reflexes. Not a single bit of clever play from Messi could change the scoreline, with an offside flag cutting short Argentina’s celebrations.

The turning point of the match came five minutes after Ndoye’s equalizer when Briel Embolo, already cautioned for a reckless challenge on Leandro Paredes, received a second yellow card for simulation. A VAR review confirmed Embolo’s dive near the touchline, leaving Switzerland a man down and their hopes hanging by a thread. Embolo walked off the field in tears, a stark contrast to the earlier optimism that had come into the Swiss camp.

The intensity increased as both sides pressed for a winner. Mac Allister almost doubled his tally with a powerful header, only for Kobel to keep Switzerland in contention. In the final moments of normal time, Lisandro Martínez had his effort brilliantly saved, sending the match into extra time.

As the threat of a penalty loomed, Álvarez delivered a decisive strike that shattered the Swiss resistance. Lautaro Martínez brightened the scoreline, pouncing on the rebound to send Argentina through to the semi-finals, where they will face England in Atlanta.

Switzerland’s disciplined defensive display would be marred by Embolo’s costly dismissal, while Argentina are moving forward, their hopes of winning another title alive thanks to the heroics of Alvarez and a team that found answers when it mattered most.
