Backstage update on Sheamus' issues with WWE ahead of departure

More details have emerged about Sheamus’ disappointment with WWE before his sudden departure from the company.

News broke on Sunday that Sheamus was leaving WWE after rejecting the offer of a restructured deal. “The Celtic Warrior” had been with WWE since 2007, winning four world championships, the 2012 Royal Rumble and the 2015 Money in the Bank ladder match.

Aside from being a longtime fan favorite and his status, Sheamus’ departure from WWE was also a surprise as he claimed to have signed a five-year extension with the company last year.

In an update, the self-made pro reported in the latest episode self created session (h/t ringside news) that Sheamus “quit” the WWE creative team when he was kicked out of the Intercontinental Championship match at WrestleMania 40.

According to the report, Sheamus also thought that WWE would book him for a title match with Braun Breaker at WrestleMania 41, which never happened. Sheamus was also having difficulty communicating with Triple H and was confused about being kept off television despite being healthy:

“I was told that Sheamus left WWE creative when Mania 40 was no longer pursuing the IC title. He believed something was going to happen with him and Braun for the Mania 41 IC belt, and they did that in early January and kind of moved on.

“He and The New Day and a lot of other legends realized that things really changed significantly, not only in terms of their usage but also in terms of communication with the office. It became even more difficult to stop Triple H for a conversation… Sheamus hasn’t been called on many TV appearances for which he was healthy, which is very strange.

And there was very little communication as to why that was. At that time, I was told he knew, like, ‘Okay, the creative is ripe right now. It is what it is.'”

Sheamus only needed the Intercontinental Championship to become WWE Grand Slam Champion. Despite his loyalty to the company, Sheamus inexplicably never got the chance to accomplish his ultimate WWE goal.

AEW should make a serious effort for Sheamus

AEW has been a popular home for former WWE superstars, so they immediately jump out as an ideal landing spot for Sheamus. His longtime tag team partner, Cesaro (Claudio Castagnoli), left for AEW in 2022 and enjoyed tremendous success there.

Tony Khan and AEW have done a great job in maximizing the talents of former WWE Superstars who were underutilized before their departures. So, don’t be surprised if there is mutual interest between Sheamus and AEW.
