Well, the next-to-last thing in the world she wants to do is have another abstract conversation with Muggle Mom about what and how Julia is doing 13 months after graduating from a small, expensive, local (Janice’s words, filled with disdain) college with an impractical (Janice’s words) degree in communications and film studies.

Janice answers. She is a white woman of about fifty with Mediterranean complexion. She has tied her black-but-graying hair into a ponytail. Large blue light-blocking glasses weigh down the bridge of his thin nose. She wears expensive workout gear and is sitting at her huge desk in her even more spacious office. The large window behind him glows with the glow of San Francisco. Office lights are dimmed until sunset. Julia knows it’s sunset time at the office because Janice showed her all the settings. “Desert Sky” was the brightest.

“There’s my genius daughter calling from the Lizard Lounge,” says Janice. Janice’s use of “genius” instead of other adjectives is on par with “unambitious” or “unfocused” or anything that comes up with “un-.” She wouldn’t mind being called hard-working, but in Janice’s mind, no one works harder or longer than Janice, and her calculations don’t equate Julia’s 60-plus hours a week at two low-paying jobs to actually working hard.

“I’d rather be in the lounge on a Sunday night than in the office,” says Julia.

“Trust me, I’d rather stay home. But…” She shrugs, looks around the office, and doesn’t finish the thought.

Julia completed the work for him. “Unbridled capitalism waits for no women?”

“something like that.”

“Is there anyone else there?”

“Just security and me.” She smiles It’s sad and honest.
