A good crowd gathered for the first event. The partners return with a full range of outdoor activities designed for fans of all ages, blending baseball with conservation education and a serious appeal to outdoor gear fans.
What is happening on 29th August?
Throughout Battery Atlanta, attendees will find live animal encounters, fishing education demonstrations, wildlife and conservation education booths and outdoor entertainment demonstrations. Gifts are also scattered at the venue.
The headliner for gear enthusiasts: a limited-edition Realtree APX camouflage Atlanta Braves jersey featuring Chipper Jones, No. 10. The first 15,000 fans through the gate get one. Available in adult-only large and extra-large, so plan to arrive early if you want one.
Jones was a Hall of Fame third baseman and lifelong outdoorsman. It’s natural to put your number on a camo jersey for a night of hunting and fishing, and it gives the event a real connection to Georgia’s outdoor tradition rather than just a marketing tie-in.
What are Georgia DNR and Realtree going to do here
Georgia DNR Commissioner Walter Rabon designed the event as an outreach opportunity. “This event gives us a great opportunity to connect with families and fans of all ages through hands-on activities,” Rabon said.
Braves senior vice president of marketing Adam Zimmerman explained how well the partnership has worked out over the past year. “Our fans have shown us how deeply outside traditions are woven into the fabric of Braves Country,” Zimmerman said.
Georgia has a strong involvement in hunting and fishing. The state manages millions of acres of wildlife management areas and public fishing waters. Such events expose hunting and fishing to those who do not currently have licenses, which is the long game the DNR plays with realty.
RealTree is headquartered in Georgia, making it a home-state partnership for the Columbus-based company. The brand has a long track record of outdoor sponsorships and TV content, but pairing with a Major League Baseball team for a conservation outreach program is something different.
Growing trend in outdoor recruitment
Hunting and fishing participation has been relatively flat nationally, with some variation by state and species. Wildlife agencies across the country have experimented with sports partnerships and public programs to reach younger and more urban audiences. Whether these events translate into actual license purchases is difficult to measure, but the Georgia DNR seems committed to the experiment.
At the beginning of last year, fans were so interested that everyone came back for repeat races. The Chipper Jones jersey is a smart addition, giving fans a solid reason to look beyond the baseball game early.
