Save shaving for after bathing: If you’re shaving completely, do it in the shower, or right after. Warm water softens thick pubic hair and relaxes the skin, making the scrotum smoother and much easier to shave than when it’s cold and everything is tight. Trimming is more forgiving, but a hot shower still makes the job more comfortable.
Go with the grain: To shave right down to the skin, start with a hydrating, lubricating shaving cream, then shave in the direction your hair naturally grows whenever possible. As Dr. Turner recommends, a well-lubricated shave is more comfortable, and going with the grain dramatically reduces the chance of razor bumps and ingrown hairs.
Finish with moisturizer: Whether you trim or shave, apply a light, fragrance-free moisturizer afterward to help restore the skin barrier and reduce irritation. If you’re prone to friction, it’s worth adding an anti-friction balm to your routine.
How we tested
We’ve been testing and recommending grooming tools for over a decade, and we revisit this guide several times a year to make sure our picks still represent the best pubic hair trimmers you can buy. As new models hit the market, we test them alongside longtime favorites to see if they’re really any better.
When evaluating pubic hair trimmers, we prioritize the features that matter most for real-world use: safe blades and protective guards, comfortable ergonomics, waterproof construction, battery life, and how confidently each trimmer handles different lengths of hair without snagging, pulling, or irritating the hair.
We also take care to test our recommendations based on hair type, density, and grooming habits. Some testers maintain things closely, while others tackle weeks of development at a time.
