Looking back over the decades, Chevrolet’s changing slogans unintentionally capture the Tri-Five’s place in American culture. Tri-Fives originated at Chevy in the ’50s, when their slogan was “See the USA in your Chevrolet…America, the Greatest Land.” The auto maker invites Americans to explore their country in a Chevrolet. Millions did, and for many of them the Chevrolet Tri-Five was there.
1970s
Although it had been two decades since its inception, Tri-Five’s popularity skyrocketed by the mid-1970s. This growth coincided with Chevrolet’s now-famous slogan, “Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet”. An actual time machine may be a sci-fi creation – a fictional device that provides travel into the past – but in the form of a car – the Chevy Tri-Five has been taking Americans through time for seventy years. It takes people back to their first dates, graduations and proms. This leads them to Friday nights spent primarily in drag, from stoplight-to-stoplight to Saturday street racing and weekend garage projects.
It returns them to the picnic park where they were taken by their grandparents, on their very long, very tight summer vacation family road trip. At the time they were traveling through Cedar City, Utah, and found the people so friendly that they were convinced the travelers had an ulterior motive of burying them in the ground behind the local hotel and turning them into beef jerky (subject). Few cars have lived so many different lives, and even fewer continue to see new cars produced.
