10 Recommendations to Convince You Comfort is Scary

When I was recently asked what really defines cozy horror, I could only answer: vibes. I think this is most true of this sub-genre, because what makes something “comfortable” is very subjective to begin with, and when you add horror elements in, the sliding scale of what is considered too scary varies from person to person. This makes cozy horror even more challenging to classify. But here’s my more accurate answer, as someone who has only recently immersed myself in this fascinating genre: cozy horror is a subgenre of horror that involves (relatively) low stakes, mild scares, and generally isn’t as dark as other horror novels. Those three factors – low stakes, mild scares, not being too dark – were my main criteria when choosing books for this list.

My definition matches up pretty well with the online consensus that cozy horror is anything that isn’t too scary and leaves you with a good feeling at the end. There may even be some version of a happy ending. Thinking Cheat, welcome to nightvale, addams family, what do we do in the shadows, the Nightmare Before ChristmasAnd over the garden wall. Many Halloween classics, especially the more family-friendly ones, fall into this category.

So, while you will find some scary and demonic creatures in the books below, you shouldn’t feel the need to turn on the lights – at least not any more than usual.

someone you can nest for by John Wiswell

But when a book about a cruel shapeshifter disguised as a human decides that a kind woman named Homily would make a perfect co-parent, it hits you over the head with such a mixture of horror and charm that suddenly you realize you need a name for it: “Cozy Horror.”
