Zero-emission commercial vehicle market in the United States (April–June 2026) - International Council on Clean Transportation

Summary

A total of 205,939 new Class 2b–8 commercial vehicles were registered in Q2 2026 in the United States, of which 9,166 were zero emission (4.5%). Total registrations increased by 17.9% relative to Q1, and zero-emission registrations increased by 267.5% compared with the previous quarter. Year-on-year, the commercial vehicle market had 5.9% fewer total registrations, while zero-emission registrations recovered from a substantial drop in Q1 2026 to reach a year-on-year growth of 8.8%. Both the absolute number of zero-emission registrations and zero-emission market penetration set record highs this quarter. A strong rebound in medium-duty truck (MDT) registrations propelled the growth of zero-emission vehicles. Meanwhile, registrations for heavy-duty trucks (HDTs) and buses were both down relative to Q1 2026.

Zero-emission market by state

Between April and June 2026, Indiana led U.S. states with the highest number of new zero-emission commercial vehicle registrations (3,036), followed by Washington (988), Maryland (922), Florida (584), and California (438). In terms of the share of zero-emission vehicles among commercial vehicle registrations, Washington ranked highest (26.8%), followed by Maryland (18.5%), Indiana (15.2%), Virginia (11.1%), and Louisiana (7.0%).

The 11 states that have adopted the Advanced Clean Trucks (ACT) regulation registered 2,799 of the 9,166 (30.5%) total zero-emission commercial vehicles registered during Q2 2026. In these states, 6.9% of all commercial vehicle registrations were zero emission, higher than the average of 3.8% for non-ACT states and the national average of 4.5%.

Zero-emission market by vehicle type

Medium-duty trucks (MDTs), which include Class 2b–6 vans and trucks, continued to dominate the zero-emission commercial vehicle market, accounting for almost all registrations in Q2 2026. Heavy-duty trucks (HDTs) and buses accounted for 0.8% and 1.9% of zero-emission registrations in Q2 2026, respectively.

At 6.4%, the share of zero-emission vehicles among total registrations was highest in the MDT segment this quarter. Zero-emission vehicles accounted for 4.5% of bus registrations and only 0.11% of HDT registrations.

Buses

With a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) above 14,001 lb

In Q2 2026, 177 zero-emission buses were registered, a 4.5% share of total new bus registrations. This represents an 11.5% quarter-on-quarter decline but a 9.3% year-on-year increase. Illinois registered the most zero-emission buses (26), followed by Pennsylvania (25), New York (22), Ohio (21), and Michigan (15). Overall, the 11 ACT states registered 62 zero-emission buses, while non-ACT states registered 115. The average share of zero-emission bus registrations in ACT states was 6.0%, compared with 3.9% in non-ACT states.

Class 7 buses represented 91.5% of zero-emission bus registrations in Q2 2026, and Class 8 buses accounted for the remaining 8.5%. Roughly half (50.3%) of zero-emission buses were multi-purpose buses, with the remainder recorded as unspecified vehicle types.

Traton and Daimler continued to dominate the bus market. Outside of these two, Sabanci and Volvo only recorded registrations of internal combustion engine (ICE) buses, while BYD and Lion Electric recorded only zero-emission bus registrations. Like in previous quarters, our datalig and New Flyer were missing from the statistics

Medium-duty truck market

Trucks and vans with a GVWR between 8,501 and 26,000 lb (Classes 2b–6)

There were 8,920 zero-emission MDT registrations in Q2 2026, a more than threefold increase compared with the previous quarter, and a 10.4% increase compared with Q2 2025.1 As a result of this substantial growth, zero-emission MDT market penetration rose to 6.4%.

Indiana had the highest number of zero-emission MDT registrations in Q2 2026 with 3,027 registrations. Washington was a distant second with 978 registrations, followed by Maryland (915), Florida (583), and Texas (419). Of total zero-emission MDTs, 30.4% were registered in ACT states, where the average zero-emission market penetration was 8.5% compared with an average of 5.7% for non-ACT states.

The composition of the MDT market varied significantly between zero-emission and ICE vehicles. The vast majority of zero-emission MDT registrations were Class 2b vehicles, among which vans were the dominant vehicle type. While more than 60% of ICE MDT registrations were Class 2b vehicles and vans, the distribution of other weight classes and vehicle types was more even.

Ri Q2. The leading ICE MDT manufacturers—Ford, General Motors, Stellantis, and Daimler—all have products in the zero-emission market. Daimler and Toyota’s new joint venture, Archion, is the holding company of the brand Rizon

Zero-emission HDT registrations continued to decline in Q2 2026, falling to 0.1%. Only 69 zero-emission HDTs were registered during this quarter, half the number of registrations in Q1 2026 and the lowest since Q4 2022.

California and Georgia tied for the highest number of zero-emission HDT registrations in Q2 2026 with 17 vehicles each; Illinois was third with 10 registrations. No other state had double-digit registrations in this quarter. There were more zero-emission registrations in non-ACT states (42) than in ACT states (27). The zero-emission HDT penetration rate in ACT states was 0.4%, compared with 0.1% in non-ACT states.

As in previous quarters, Class 8 vehicles were the most common weight class among HDT registrations (89.1% of ICE vehicles and 84.1% of zero-emission vehicles). More than three quarters of zero-emission HDT registrations were tractors, with rigid trucks and unspecified body types making up the remaining 24.6%.

Yard-tractor manufacturer Orange EV was the leading zero-emission HDT manufacturer with a 42.0% market share (totaling 29 registrations). All other manufacturers had fewer than 10 registrations: BYD and Paccar each had 7 (10.1%), Nikola had 6 (8.7%), and Volvo Truck had 5 (7.2%). In the HDT market, Daimler (38.3%), Paccar (30.5%), and Volvo Group (15.6%), whose HDT brands consist of Volvo Trucks and Mack Trucks, maintained their market dominance.

Market focus: Manufacturer financial data

After the steep year-on-year decline in Q1 2026, the major medium- and heavy-duty vehicle manufacturer groups in the United States—Daimler, Volvo, Traton, and Paccar—saw North American revenues and vehicle deliveries stabilize in Q2 2026. Although order intakes continued to rebound, Daimler was the only manufacturer group to post year-on-year growth in revenue, deliveries, and order intakes.
