I’ve said it before: the only good polo is pickup polo. Colorful, patterned knit polos may get everyone’s attention, but for me, they’re a nightmare: clinging in all the wrong places, and then flopping horribly in other places. And yes, my main complaint still stands: polos are meant to keep you cool in the summer, not made from winter fabric. It’s 103 degrees Fahrenheit in Paris right now—I guarantee you that no street style shot will feature a single, “breathable” merino polo.

To be honest, we’ve never needed to make any changes to the formula, especially given the hardy, cooling, heirloom magic that comes from the textured, waffle-like nature of the pik weave. You know the one: When you think of a polo shirt, it’s that fabric that feels crisp and substantial on the first day, and then somehow feels crisp, substantial and soft on the 11,723rd day. Simply put, pique polos look great without looking bad, don’t wick away sweat like any other fabric, and are welcome to put in any kind of wash cycle. You can’t say the same for knitting.

The only downside to all this confusion is that occasionally, incredible but overlooked pickup polos will go on sale. That’s exactly what’s happening this Prime Day, with big discounts on some of the best polos in the game from Lacoste to Tommy Hilfiger and Brooks Brothers. Special mention to Lacoste here: The brand invented the polo shirt in 1933, introducing the style of, you guessed it, estrangement.
