The new Corvette Grand Sport is exactly the sub-$90k supercar desired by Chevy loyalists

As the next big thing from Chevrolet, the 2027 Chevy C8 Corvette Grand Sport has captured the attention of Chevy fans and, once again, the eighth-generation Corvette has taken the auto world by storm. Not because of the C8’s recent Pikes Peak record-breaking performance or its repeated 230 MPH tests. As the ZR1 dominates those speed-blistering headlines, the Corvette Grand Sport has quietly been becoming the C8 that traditional Corvette buyers have been waiting for.

C8 price difference changed everything

The C8’s significant enhancements in aesthetics and performance for Chevy’s most prestigious nameplate once again cemented the Corvette’s status as America’s supercar. The unveiling of the mid-engine Stingray was a revelation – not only because of its re-engineered exotic styling, but also because its base-model price was only $60,000.

Cost of C8 delay

As the buyer would have it, a combination of unprecedented events – A long autoworkers’ strike that lasted 40 days in 2019The global COVID pandemic shutdown in early 2020, and the resulting supply chain problems – inadvertently derailed Chevrolet’s pricing plans. Circumstances pushed the C8’s production launch and customer deliveries back to 2020, yet that didn’t diminish buyers’ desire for the latest generation of the redesigned Corvette. In fact, the delay made the desire more intense.

Corvette dealers get in on the action

Hard-to-source components increased production costs and the C8 only reached dealership lots. Limited supply increased buyers’ willingness to pay a premium to own a C8 Corvette – even if that cost translated into upside equity.

No stranger to the invoice line – Additional Dealer Markup (ADM) – previous generations of ‘Vettes saw price increases for top-tier models, or special builds, but the C8 launches at this very unique time in recent supply and demand history. This turned into a breeding ground for dealer markups that can add more than 100 percent to the MSRP. The $60,000 C8 Corvette was no more, and a traditional buyer was disappointed.

As the cab-forward C8 lineup arrived, the E-Ray, Z06 and ZR1 variants came to life, and prices continued to skyrocket – both MSRP and ADM. While buyers were at the mercy of the dealer on their markups, Chevy’s rising MSRP was not arbitrary. Each new C8 version wasn’t just getting a power boost – it was venturing deeper into supercar territory, and the cost of supporting it was part of the process.

Chevrolet’s reimagining of the C8 Corvette hit the market in 2020 at a fraction of the Euro supercar’s cost, but the re-engineering of the high-performance models joining the Corvette lineup drove up prices. Soon the American supercar made by Chevy had an MSRP that soared far beyond its attainable price point and reached six figures. The development of Chevy’s C8 naturally became its supercar problem – paying for prestige, paying for performance, paying for power.

The best performance deal in the world just got better

Inside and out, the Gen-Eight Corvette debuted with a radical makeover. Its distinctive silhouette was redesigned to accommodate the relocated rear engine. And the resulting aggressive profile more than hints at a Euro supercar. Six years after it first went into production, the C8 is still often unrecognizable as a Chevrolet and is often mistaken as an exotic in the McLaren or Ferrari line.

The C8’s manual transmission deletion, double-wishbone suspension addition, and driver-focused cockpit – complete with a windswept center control zone – only strengthened the perception that the C8 was now more of a “supercar” than ever. Even an entry-level C8 Stingray Z51 clocked a 2.9-second 0-60 MPH time, putting its run time well within European V10 and V12 benchmarks and putting the C8 in supercar company like Lamborghini’s Huracan and Aventador.

Although it was unquestionably a dead-stop dominant, the Stingray Z51’s 495-horsepower output left it with a top-end deficit against its Euro rivals. Chevy responded with the E-Ray Hybrid’s front-mounted electric motor, increasing combined horsepower to 655. The e-AWD system can purr or run completely silent in stealth mode, while the boost from the electric motor shaved half a second off the C8’s 0-60 timing. Of course, the Grand Sport

The E-Ray wasn’t Chevy’s only move. Chevy took the C8 platform forward by investing in a true track-bred Corvette by dropping an engineered LT6 V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft in the Z06 engine bay. The LT6 holds the record as the most powerful naturally aspirated production V8, boosting the Z06’s output to 670 horsepower, and cutting 0-60 to 2.6 seconds.

Z06 to ZR1

Chevy’s supercar commitment didn’t stop with the Z06. The C8 range-topper is represented by the four-digit horsepower ZR1 and ZR1X. Each boasted the most powerful factory Corvette engine ever built – a twin-turbocharged version of the Z06’s LT6 that was dubbed the LT7. Combining the LT7 and front-axle e-drive motor, horsepower is rated at 1,064 for the ZR1 and 1,250 for the ZR1X.

As a spec-level C8, the ZR1X with more than 1,000 horsepower is on par with the world’s most exclusive performance cars, yet its 0-60 time of less than two seconds outpaces the Ferrari SF90, Koenigsegg Jesko and Bugatti Chiron. Beyond “supercars”, Chevy turned the C8 into the American hypercar – and although it is produced in limited quantities, it is the only assembly-line-produced hypercar from a major manufacturer in the world. And let’s face it: hypercars cost money. Thankfully, the Grand Sport hits its mark without forgetting the people who really love such vehicles.
