Over the past year, iRacing Studios has been working on a dedicated IndyCar title, which has not existed since the mid-2000s. The road to a new IndyCar game has been a tumultuous one, as the license for the American open-wheel racing series was briefly tied up with Motorsport Games before that deal expired with nothing to show for it, and IndyCar landed with iRacing.
We hadn’t heard anything about the game for months, but on Friday we got an update that it’s coming in early 2027, along with some screenshots.
Title, officially called IndyCar Racing: The Game (A bit unnecessary, but sure), will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC via Steam next year. When it was announced about a year ago, iRacing stated that the game would use its proprietary Orontes engine rather than middleware used for iRacing’s core simulator or Unreal Engine. Orontes is the same technology that powers the publisher’s futuristic racer exocrossWhich is remarkably refined and high-performing despite its more fantastical environment.
Originally, the IndyCar game was planned to launch in 2026, but it appears that each piece of software in development is being pushed several months into the future – and given that iRacing is looking for a small change here – it’s hardly surprising that it’s slipped to 2027.
Still, this is one we’ve definitely been waiting for. IndyCar fans know it’s some of the best racing these days, and American open-wheel motorsport has rarely received the attention it deserves in the interactive medium.
