This week, the bestseller lists are mostly in the same order, and they look very similar to last week. Theo of Golden Alan Levy continues to lead the group, and several of the Off-Campus novels hold on to their bestseller status thanks to recent TV adaptations.
The only new title on the list this week is disaster club by Kathryn Stockett, the latest book from the author of Servant. Servant was a huge bestseller, became a blockbuster film, but received much criticism for its use stereotypes of black people and white saviorism, as well as its historical inaccuracies. (See “N open statement For fans of Servant by the Association of Black Women Historians” for more information.) However, this criticism did not prevent Stockett from securing a lucrative book deal for her new novel, and it does not seem to have affected its sales.
Relatedly, the list continues to lack diversity on many levels, including being disproportionately comprised of white authors. (The publishing industry is still quick to promote white authors who write about racism, such as ServantInstead of works by writers of color.) Here are some independent press bestsellers you should know about. Brading Sweetgrass By Robin Wall Kimmerer, taiwan travelogue by Shuang-Zhi Yang, and The Wretched of the Earth By Frantz Fanon.
To get these numbers, we look at new York TimesBoth combined print and e-book fiction and combined print and e-book nonfiction lists; Amazon charts, both fiction and nonfiction; Publishers Weekly; USA Today; and indie bestsellers, both fiction and nonfiction, paperback and hardcover.
