How to Shop for Men’s Clothing on Amazon
If you’re reading this, you’re probably well aware of Amazon’s reputation—as a harbinger of doom for those brick-and-mortar stores we love, and also as a wasteland of dubiously named third-party brands. We are not here to set the record straight on any front. Sometimes, though, you need a nice shirt right away — or have $50 to spend on jeans — and the Everything Store seems like your best option. We got this; Hey, we’ve been there too.
The real secret to buying men’s clothing on Amazon is to temper expectations accordingly – you won’t find any fancy designer brands in the mix – and stick with labels you already trust. (We’d recommend staying away from any brand you haven’t heard of, let alone one with a lot of vowels in its name.) This gives you a surprisingly decent menswear range to choose from: Calvin Klein undies, Dickies work jackets, Timex watches, Levi’s jeans. We’ve bought all of the above from Amazon in the past, and we have no regrets about our purchases – in fact, many of them turn out worse than their luxurious counterparts.
At this point, every member of the GQ recommendations team is so well-versed in the today-gone-tomorrow nature of Amazon’s inventory that compiling this guide wasn’t that difficult. (Hey, we prize scale and convenience as much as you do.) By and large, though, we tried to avoid flash-in-the-pan deals in favor of reliable stalwarts that are sold directly by the respective brands, and are available in a full range of sizes.
How we test and review products
Style is subjective, we know – that’s the fun of it. But we’re serious about helping our audiences prepare. Whether it’s the best white sneakers, the most affordable suits, or the most must-have menswear drops of the week, the perspective of GQ recommendations is built on years of practical experience, an insider’s awareness of what’s what and what’s next, and a mission to find the best version of everything at every price point.
Our staff isn’t able to try on every single piece of clothing you read about on GQ.com (fashion moves fast these days), but we have an intimate knowledge of each brand’s strengths and we know the hallmarks of quality clothing – from materials and sourcing, to craftsmanship, to sustainability efforts that aren’t just greenwashing. GQ recommendations draw on our own editorial experience with those brands, how they make their clothes, and how those clothes have been reviewed by customers. The bottom line: GQ wouldn’t ask you to wear it if we didn’t.
