The 2027 Kia Niro ditches its EV option and goes back to basics

Kia gave the 2027 Niro a sharper face, more tech, and a very significant change for the US: the small crossover is now hybrid-only.

This means the Niro EV is gone from the US lineup for at least the 2027 model year. So is the plug-in hybrid version, which had already faded from American menus. What’s left is a regular hybrid crossover powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Total output remains at 139 horsepower, which means the Niro still won’t scare anyone at the drag strip unless another car is parked.

Still, the move says some interesting things about the US market. Kia is not moving away from electrification. It’s simply turning the Niro into a practical hybrid option while letting its dedicated EV family do the battery-electric heavy lifting. In other words, Nero no longer has to be everything to everyone. That work clearly belongs to BMW, which has treated the BMW X5 lineup like a powertrain buffet, with gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and even hydrogen versions in various corners of the world. German indecision has rarely seemed so intricately engineered.

Kia’s own strategy seems neat, though maybe a little strange. The Niro started life as a fuel-sipping option for those who wanted crossover utility without the crossover thirst. Then it became hybrid, plug-in hybrid and EV nameplate. Now, for 2027, Kia is bringing it back to a basic idea: efficient, simple, everyday hybrid transportation.

This seems oddly sensible in a market where many buyers still prefer the idea of ​​an EV over the daily homework that can come with buying one. A regular hybrid doesn’t need a home charger, a charging app, a route-planning ritual, or a personality built around kilowatt-hours. You simply put gas in it and let the electric motor help you as far as it can. This is electrification without group project.

The refreshed Nero also gets a cleaner look. Kia added redesigned front and rear fascias, new star map lighting signatures, revised bumper treatments and new exterior colors called Ivory Silver and Sunset Beige. Inside, the crossover now features a standard 12.3-inch infotainment screen, an available 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay, and over-the-air updates available through Android Auto and Kia’s Connected Car Navigation Cockpit.

There is more technology. Depending on the trim, the Niro may offer streaming services, themed display options, Kia’s AI assistant, Highway Drive Assist 2, 360-degree surround view monitor, and blind-spot view monitor. It gives the little hybrid a more modern cabin, without pretending it’s suddenly become a luxury spaceship.

An interesting comparison might not be to another EV, but to something like the Subaru Forester. Both appeal to those who want real-world utility over showroom theater. The Subaru is outdoorsy and rugged; Kia leans forward efficiently and technologically. No one needs to explain themselves about the 45 minute charging stop.
