The Donington Park weekend offered plenty of drama on the timing screens, but one of its most talked-about moments was away from the battle for the positions – a heated exchange between Jake Dixon and Miguel Oliveira during the warm-up session, which saw the British rider angrily point at his Portuguese rival.
The incident, caught on camera and quickly circulating around the paddock, showed Dixon making an unmistakable gesture in Oliveira’s direction – the universal signal for “crazy”, delivered with obvious frustration. The Honda HRC man wasn’t too impressed by what happened between the two riders on the track a while ago and made no attempt to hide his emotions.
Warm-up sessions, by their nature, are a breeding ground for this type of friction. Riders are working through their final setup checks, running very different lap times, some working hard on fresh tires while others are cruising and gathering data. The difference in speed can be immense, and for as long as the sport has existed, relations have soured between riders in each category of motorcycle racing due to misunderstandings about who is and who is not eligible for the flying lap.
For Oliveira, it was just another unwanted complication in a weekend that was already more than enough. The Portuguese rider endured a difficult British round, struggling for pace throughout the session before saving eleventh place in Race 1 and twelfth in Race 2, while afterwards he candidly admitted that his BMW package needed to improve in every single area to close the gap to the leading Ducatis. The last thing he needed was to add a collision with a fellow rider to his list of problems.
For Dixon, the frustration is equally understandable in the context of a rider fighting to establish himself and extract every advantage from limited track time. When a warm-up session goes wrong, the consequences can be felt throughout race day.
Neither rider allowed the incident to escalate and both started preparing for their respective races. But the images have become one of the defining talking points of a Donington weekend that was already packed with stories – from Nicolo Bulega’s emphatic double victory on Sunday, to Iker Lecuona’s Saturday success, to Ducati’s confirmation as constructors’ champion.
Sometimes the most memorable moments of a race weekend don’t happen during the race at all. And at Donington Park, a warm-up session gesture from one rider to another led to exactly that kind of moment.
