Romelu Lukaku has drawn a clear line over his future at Napoli, with his agent Federico Pastorello emphatically rejecting any notion of the Belgian striker accepting a secondary role at the club or taking a pay cut. Despite a turbulent 2025-26 campaign due to injuries and a broken relationship with Napoli, Lukaku and his camp remain firm on his status as a leading player.
With only one year remaining on Lukaku’s contract, he suffered a disappointing season, limiting himself to just seven appearances and a solitary goal. Nevertheless, Pastorello has made it clear that the 33-year-old’s pedigree and reputation as one of the world’s most prolific strikers demands respect and proper recognition at the club.
When questioned by Sky Sport Italia about Lukaku’s desire to sit on the bench, Pastorello said clearly: “Obviously not. He is an extraordinary player, and he has proved it. He is one of the most brilliant strikers in the world. It is difficult for us to accept such a situation.” The agent further suggested that recent comments from the Napoli management, specifically referencing Manna, may be rooted in financial motivations, given the presence of two top-tier strikers at the club.
The condition of the contract is also an important point. Pastorello addressed the possibility of a contract extension or salary restructuring, highlighting the complexities involved. “Even proposing a contract extension comes with additional costs. It’s not just about salaries. Perhaps the time has not yet come to stretch his wages over a longer period,” he said, indicating that Lukaku’s camp is not willing to compromise easily on financial terms.
Reflecting on the difficulties of the previous season, Pastorello defended his client, saying: “Last season was not entirely his fault. If he had been allowed to live and train where he wanted, he would have come back sooner and played a leading role at the World Cup, which, in the end, he did anyway.” The agent also underlined Lukaku’s professional integrity and ambition, saying, “Romelu is not the kind of person who stays where he is not wanted. A club strategy could be completely legitimate.”
As speculation continues over Lukaku’s future and Napoli’s intentions, one thing is certain: the Belgian striker will not settle for a reduced role or a compromise contract. The impasse sets the stage for a high-stakes summer as both players and clubs navigate a complex web of sporting ambition and financial realities.
