Google’s parent company, Alphabet, recently announced that it is recalling its entire Waymo fleet.
The company says about 4,000 of its self-driving cars are being recalled because of a software problem that could allow the vehicles to enter a closed freeway construction zone and keep moving.
According to multiple reports, there have been more than a dozen incidents in California and Arizona since April where Vemos suddenly crossed ramp-stop signs and entered active construction zones on freeways.
Alphabet says Waymo 5th Generation automated driving systems manufactured between May 17, 2022, and May 19, 2026 are affected by the recall.
according to reutersThe company automatically banned freeway driving until the problem was resolved.
“We have identified one area of improvement with respect to performance around freeway construction zones,” Waymo said. through techcrunch. “We voluntarily restricted freeway operations last month while making improvements, proactively notified state and federal regulators, and decided to file a voluntary recall With NHTSA.”
This is Alphabet’s second recall in a little more than a month due to Waymo cars entering flooded roads with higher speed limits. That memory came to light on April 20 when a Waymo drove into a flooded street in San Antonio, Texas.
So, for now, that means Vemos can’t travel on freeways. Vemos will still be around, but will only be available to drive on surface streets.
In other words, if you need a ride to the airport or you’re trying to avoid traffic, don’t go with Waymo.
