Rising Breast Cancer Incidence Among Younger Women Raises Concerns
Healthcare experts call for awareness and preventive care amid rising breast cancer cases in younger women during a recent event in Lagos.
Healthcare specialists have raised alarms about an increasing incidence of breast cancer among younger women. This concern was highlighted during the 2026 Breast Cancer Awareness Month event in Lagos, co-hosted by Feet2Fit Integrative Health Wellness Ltd. and CFG Africa. The theme of the event was ‘Sharing Data, Fostering Preventive Care and Early Detection’, focusing on the importance of awareness, early diagnosis, and lifestyle changes to combat this growing health issue.
Dr Damilola Adeyemo, a Radiologist at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, noted that not all breast lumps are indicative of cancer. While some lumps may originate from benign conditions such as cysts or fibroadenomas, she emphasised the need for medical evaluation if any abnormalities occur. Dr Adeyemo described several warning signs that should prompt women to seek medical attention, including nipple discharge, changes in breast skin, persistent pain, and alterations in breast size or shape. She insisted that many breast cancers do not present as visible lumps and that some changes can be subtle or hard to identify.
The emphasis on the awareness of breast cancer is crucial as it can also affect women without a family history of the disease. Furthermore, Dr Adeyemo reminded the audience that men are also at risk. She encouraged self-examinations to recognise unusual changes but stressed that these should complement professional medical assessments.
Dr Elizabeth Falabi, Medical Director of Feet2Fit Integrative Health Wellness Ltd., echoed the urgency of preventive healthcare. She called on women to adopt healthier lifestyles and prioritise early diagnosis, expressing that these measures can significantly impact health outcomes. According to Dr Falabi, fear remains a significant barrier preventing women from engaging in regular screenings, which could allow for timely treatment.
Mrs Mobolaji Edward, a fitness enthusiast, advised women to engage in regular physical activities such as walking, aerobics, and gym workouts, asserting that these activities contribute to overall health. Meanwhile, Registered Dietitian Oluwajomiloju Asagidigbi recommended maintaining a healthy weight through balanced diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fibre. She also cautioned against excessive consumption of processed foods, suggesting that dietary choices could be pivotal in reducing breast cancer risk.
Asagidigbi highlighted the importance of adequate sleep and regular medical check-ups as vital aspects of preventive healthcare. Anjolaoluwa Boluwajoko, a Global Markets Analyst at CFG Africa, announced that the partnership with Feet2Fit aims to expand awareness initiatives to their employees, clients, and surrounding communities.
The experts collectively urged women to dismiss misinformation, confront their fears about screenings, and seek medical attention for any unusual breast changes. By fostering open conversations about breast health and encouraging proactive measures, they aim to combat the rising trend of breast cancer cases among younger demographics.
