The 2024 Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island came to an abrupt and disappointing end as all MotoGP racing activities scheduled for Sunday were cancelled due to severe weather conditions. Following the cancellation of both the Moto3 and Moto2 races earlier in the day, Race Direction initially considered postponing the premier class event but ultimately decided to cancel the MotoGP race altogether, ending the historic venue’s presence on the calendar with an unexpected finale.

The relentless rain and deteriorating track conditions forced this unprecedented decision, leaving riders and fans frustrated yet understanding of the safety-first mandate. Franco Morbidelli, alongside other Italian riders, expressed regret over the lost opportunity to race in front of the passionate crowd. Speaking to Sky Sports, Morbidelli lamented, “It’s truly a shame we couldn’t race because it would have been amazing to compete in front of all this crowd despite the heavy rain. It would have been nice to finish on a different note, but everyone gave their best.”

Fabio Di Giannantonio, who had secured a podium

Fabio Di Giannantonio, who had secured a podium in the Sprint Race, shared his emotional farewell to Phillip Island. “I have a special connection with this place,” the VR46 rider said. “I did a full lap behind the safety car with a tear in my eye, seeing all the fans was wonderful. It’s a pity to leave like this, but safety has to come first. The conditions until five minutes ago were acceptable, but the cold and sudden heavy rain would have made it tough on the tyres.”

Ducati Lenovo’s Pecco Bagnaia acknowledged the disappointment but urged acceptance. “It’s sad to end like this on an incredible and historic circuit,” Bagnaia stated. “We all feel it’s a shame. Racing here has always been special with intense and exciting battles. Hopefully, we will return in the future.”

Enea Bastianini, representing KTM, also voiced his sadness at the abrupt end. “It’s unfortunate to finish this way on such a legendary track,” he commented. “I’ve never had major success here except a nice Sprint podium this year. These last two laps felt more like a parade. It’s a real pity.”

Marco Bezzecchi, third in the championship, highlighted

Marco Bezzecchi, third in the championship, highlighted the disappointment shared by fans and riders alike. “It’s a shame to leave this track with a bitter taste, especially for the fans who stayed through the rain,” he said. “We worked hard but will never know how it could have gone. There’s no point in dwelling on it now; we must focus on the next race.”

The cancellation marks a somber end to Phillip Island’s tenure in MotoGP, depriving fans and riders of a proper send-off on one of the sport’s most cherished circuits. Despite the frustrations, safety concerns prevailed, underscoring the unpredictable impact of weather on motorcycle racing.
