Summer is flying by, and before you know it, September will be here This means it’s dove season In many states. And just before hunting season arrives, we have new options from Apex Ammunition; Their new Dove Stratified loads are available with lead or steel pellets.
The Stratified series of shotshells contain pellets of different sizes in the same cartridge, rather than the traditional method of loading a shell with a single bullet size. Why this? Apex Ammunition says this is a way to provide more lethality at longer ranges, while also providing a tighter pattern that puts more pellets on target at all distances, providing the ideal all-round performance hunters want when wingshooting.
In the case of the new L3 high-antimony lead shot rounds, shooters will get a harder, rounder bullet whether you get a 12-gauge or 20-gauge load, either loaded with a combination of #7 and #8 pellets. You can buy a 3-inch 20 gauge load or a 2.75-inch 12 gauge load; There are two different 20 gauge loads, both in 2.75-inch lengths.
S3 steel pellet loads come with #6 and #7 pellets, and contain only one 2.75-inch 12 gauge load and one 2.75-inch 20 gauge load.
Jason Lonsberry, president and CEO of Apex Ammunition, says the new loads were developed because hunters wanted their high-performance ammo available to smaller birds:
