Max Verstappen has revealed the intense standards he enforces within Red Bull Racing, making it clear that his vocal team radio messages during the Belgian Grand Prix are a deliberate strategy to keep the entire team’s performance at their absolute peak. The four-time Formula 1 World Champion, who qualified second and finished a hard-fought third at Spa-Francorchamps, no doubt expects unwavering excellence from his team – just as they do from him.
Verstappen’s podium finish came at the end of the 44-lap contest, where he finished behind surprise winner Kimi Antonelli and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Red Bull’s RB22 showed unexpected competitiveness at Spa, a circuit where the team has typically struggled in the battle against Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren this season.
Throughout the race, Verstappen’s radio communication with race engineer Gianpiero Lambiasse became a focal point. In a heated exchange, Lambias alerted Verstappen that his front tires were getting cold and urged him to push harder to bring them up to temperature. Verstappen countered, arguing that tire temperature was not the fundamental issue at that stage of the race. On another occasion, Verstappen made reference to the engineers on the pit wall, and expressed his confidence in “the one looking at the laptop” and their ability to monitor the car’s performance data.
Addressing the media in the post-race press conference, Verstappen was challenged to clarify whether his cockpit sensations often differed from the data analyzed by the team and whether he was satisfied with the feedback he received during the race. The Dutchman quickly clarified any misunderstandings, saying: “Well, all those things you mentioned are not related to each other. The tires were cold, and looking at the laptop meant other things.”
Verstappen, who currently sits seventh in the drivers’ standings with 91 points after 10 rounds, provided a rare insight into his uncompromising mentality when communicating with Red Bull’s pit wall. “I like to keep people alert. I know everyone is doing their best, but we are not here for entertainment, so we have to be sharp all the time during the race,” Verstappen said emphatically. “I demand the most and the best because they expect the same from me.”
