Attention, Austin Hive! We have an official release timeline for Georgia Oakley’s new film sense and Sensibility. This October, we’re riding again for the Dashwood Sisters. You guys collect petticoats and horses accordingly.
The first major adaptation of the novel since Ang Lee’s 1995 novel, New s&s Daisy Edgar-Jones plays the indomitable Elinor, and Esme Creed-Miles plays her sister Marianne. We also have Fiona Shaw flying in to enjoy the scenery.
Take a look at the fresh, new trailer on YouTube.
Some key points. One: The lighting (grainy, cold) in this trailer is reminiscent of 2004 pride and Prejudice. who made it it Fans wonder if the rest of that film’s light-hearted, gritty aesthetic is back on the menu. Which actually raises a big question. Are Naturalist Austen Adaptations Here to Stay?
Than shiny entries—1995 s&s1996 decade P&P mini-series; bridgerton Joe Wright’s take on Universe—Austenland drew both criticism and favor for presenting the Bennetts as clearly lower middle class. (Note the torn edges and those chickens moving in and out of the house.) In this new s&sThe Dashwood family—suddenly extinct due to the patriarch’s demise—similarly seems a little rough around the edges. But this is appropriate.
Austen’s de-glosification could be bad news for costume designers. But it certainly helps tell the story, re: the economic stakes.
Takeaway Two: This undeniably moody preview reminds us of sense and Sensibility This is a darker story than some of Austen’s lighter stories.. His first novel is a sharp account of loss. And unlike the Bennetts, the Dashwood girls’ troubles are not imaginary. Those women are literally left in the cold until they find husbands. And Oakley’s version, vibe-wise, seems to know it.
Like Radhika Seth British Vogue gave theory“It seems like (the new film) will at least echo the gentle and sad spirit of its Ang Lee-directed predecessor.”
And as for our stars? Takeaway three: As Elinor Dashwood, Daisy Edgar-Jones—who cut her teeth on Sally Rooney adaptations—is less impressive than the inseparable Emma Thompson. But it’s great to see him playing such a lively person. The other sisters provide liveliness; Mother loses. Fiona Shaw delivers everything it should.
But judging from this entertainment-bouche, The jury is still out on the romantic lead. Everyone has big shoes to fill given Lee’s impeccably cast version, but Edward Ferrers and Herbert Northrum (as George MacKay and Colonel Brandon, respectively) are currently trailing Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman.
I’m excited for their breathtaking success, but only time will tell.
