Jurgen Klopp reveals Liverpool's grand attempt to sign Kylian Mbappe ahead of PSG move

Jurgen Klopp has lifted the curtain on Liverpool’s audacious attempt to sign Kylian Mbappe, revealing the extraordinary effort the club made to lure the French superstar ahead of a headline-grabbing move to Paris Saint-Germain.

In a candid recollection shared during his punditry for Magenta TV, Klopp detailed a secret meeting with Mbappé and his family, which was held when the striker was still shining for Monaco and being welcomed by Europe’s elite. Klopp commented, “We (Liverpool) invested in the most expensive non-transfer ever”, underlining how important the club’s search was at the time.

Klopp described a cloak-and-dagger approach that started with a flight from Blackpool to Nice. Once in Nice, the entire Mbappe family boarded a luxurious five-room private jet, setting the stage for a high-risk recruitment pitch. “We really went completely out of control,” Klopp admitted. “Then we flew in a circle, talked with the family, ate good food…” Privacy was paramount, Klopp explained, “We couldn’t be seen. We flew in a circle. It was fantastic. And then he went to Paris!” The elaborate effort ultimately ended in disappointment for Liverpool, as Mbappé chose the glamor and project of PSG.

Mbappe has since risen to superstardom, first conquering France and now making waves in Spain after moving to Real Madrid. His impact on the international stage has been huge, highlighted by his eighth World Cup goal in France’s 2–0 win over Morocco.

Meanwhile, Klopp was seen giving Mbappe a warm hug after the Frenchman scored the first goal in that match, underscoring the mutual respect between the two football icons. However, Klopp’s future may yet collide with Mbappé in a different arena. Having recently taken up a high-profile executive role with Red Bull as head of global soccer, the German is now the firm favorite to replace Julian Nagelsmann as Germany head coach – a move that could set up an exciting clash with Mbappe’s France at Euros in 2028.

Klopp confirmed that talks were ongoing with the German FA (DFB), saying, “Things moved very quickly. Julian stepped down. The DFB is looking for a successor. And they are talking to me.” He said, “What needs to happen now? Time. I am under contract with Red Bull. I have said that I am interested in negotiations. They will be intensive because it is not just about Julian Nagelsmann. I have an existing contract with Red Bull. I have said many times how much I enjoy this job. As a person, I generally respect contracts. But I have also made it clear that I am interested in negotiations with the DFB.”

The football world now watches with bated breath as Klopp is at the crossroads of his illustrious career, the shadow of that dramatic Mbappe discovery still looming large.
