Joe Shimoda returned to the spotlight at RedBud with a sensational Moto2 win, snatching the 250 championship lead in a weekend filled with drama and relentless battle. In a race that left the crowd roaring, Shimoda’s late charge not only ended his long drought for a moto win, but reshaped the entire landscape of the 250 class title battle.
On a scorching day in Buchanan, Michigan, Redbud National set off fireworks in the 250 division. After finishing third in the opening moto, Joe Shimoda performed brilliantly in Moto 2 to take the lead in the overall points. Despite his heroics, the overall victory was taken by Cole Davis, who combined a dominant Moto1 win with solid consistency to become the first rider to take two overall wins in the 2026 season. The podium was completed by Ryder DeFrancesco, while several hungry young contenders fought tooth and nail for every place.
The stakes on RedBud couldn’t be higher. Shimoda’s win is his first moto win since Unadilla at the end of last season, signaling a return to form as the championship race heats up. The 250 class has been a carousel of unpredictability, with ten different riders finding overall podiums in the first ten motos of the season – a testament to the depth and volatility of this year’s field. Every title contender is fighting for every inch, every lap and the RedBud Circuit has once again proven that it is the kingmaker in the world of Motocross.
Cole Davis started off with a textbook holeshot in Moto 1, immediately positioning himself at the front and setting a fast pace. Meanwhile, Shimoda was forced to make his way from fourth place, carefully beating rivals as the minutes passed. With just five minutes remaining, Shimoda got close to Davis and wasted no time delivering a decisive pass that thrilled the crowd. Reflecting on his race win, Shimoda said, “It feels amazing to be back on top and fighting for the lead. The bike felt perfect, and I just kept pushing.” Davis, gracious in defeat but optimistic about his chances, commented, “I came here to win, and I did what I needed to in Moto 1. It’s a long season, and we’re just getting started.”
Rider DiFrancesco produced another consistent performance, staying in the top five throughout and ultimately standing on the overall podium – making him the tenth different rider to do so in as many motos, a statistic that underlines the cut-throat competition of this year’s championship. Casey Cochrane and Nicholas Romano also made an appearance in the opening round, with Cochrane finishing fourth overall after two solid rides.
The day was not easy for everyone. Chance Hymas fought valiantly to make the top five before being defeated by Levi Kitchens, whose race was a rollercoaster of bad luck and redemption. Kitchens, having moved up to 13th after a slow start, made a remarkable comeback – climbing back to third before a costly crash on lap 9 dropped him to sixth. Undaunted, Kitchens won again and fought back to save fifth place in the moto and overall standings. “I never gave up today. It was a bad start, but I kept my head down and got it done,” Kitchens said, her resilience shining through.
Meanwhile, the RedBud circuit once again proved unforgiving. Julien Beaumars suffered two crashes – first in Moto 1 and again on lap 3 of the second race – which hampered his chances of a successful result on the day.
The championship lead is now in Shimoda’s grip and Davis is firing on all cylinders, eyeing a white-knuckle second half of the 250 class season. The unpredictability and hunger in the field has created a state of constant struggle – every point, every pass, every lap will count as the contenders barrel into the next round. Will Shimoda maintain this momentum and cement his place at the top, or will Davis and the chasing group destroy the red plate once again? The answer to this will be known only when the door to the second chapter of this exciting championship opens.
