These are the cars you buy when you want something that will last for years at minimal cost. But if you want Japanese dependability with an electric vehicle that offers good driving range, you don’t have many options.
No matter how good Japanese manufacturers are, they are still unable to compete in the EV segment. And this segment is where driving range matters most; Range anxiety is still a thing, and EV adopters want something that can go hundreds of miles between chargers. Luckily, there is a Japanese SUV that offers a driving range of over 300 miles, and it comes from a manufacturer that is known for producing the most reliable cars.
High range with Japanese reliability is rarer than you think
When you want to buy an electric vehicle in the US, especially one with really high driving range, your first choice usually won’t be a Japanese manufacturer. American brands, like Tesla, Rivian, or even Ford, along with their Korean rivals, Kia and Hyundai, are the ones you would think about. Toyota bZ is the Japanese EV with the highest driving range
Toyota’s first mainstream electric vehicle in North America was the Toyota bZ4X, one of the first vehicles to be built on Toyota’s e-TNGA modular platform designed for electric vehicles. Unfortunately for Toyota, the bZ4X was met with a lackluster reception upon its launch, and that had less to do with its strange name and more to do with what it offered. While something like the Lucid Air can offer over 500 miles of driving range, for most people, 300 miles should be more than enough. And the Toyota bZ is one that offers that better than any other Japanese rivals. Toyota claims an EPA estimated driving range of 314 miles for the XLE FWD Plus variant. Meanwhile, the base bZ is good for up to 236 miles, and the top-end FWD trim, the Limited, offers 299 miles.
The bZ’s all-wheel-drive models trade that range for better acceleration and traction on the road. Here, the XLE AWD trim offers up to 288 miles, and the top-end Limited AWD offers up to 278 miles. That’s a solid jump from the bZ4X’s 228-mile all-wheel drive range, which is a huge improvement. For what the bZ is aimed at (ie, a compact SUV that will mostly be used for urban driving), this range should be more than enough, especially when you consider its now-improved charging times.
Not the only Japanese EV with 300+ mile range
The Toyota bZ may be the Japanese EV with the highest driving range, but it has some very good Japanese competition in 2026. The two closest rivals in terms of EV driving distance are the Subaru Uncharted and Honda Prologue, with the Uncharted offering a range of up to 300 miles. However, it is still not complete; It lacks a frunk, and its 400-volt architecture lags behind some of its rivals that use 800-volt systems. Nevertheless, it is many times further than before.
