Ivan Ortola takes first Moto2 pole at German GP, overtaking Manuel Gonzalez

Ivan Ortola stormed to his first Moto2 pole position at the German Grand Prix and produced a career-defining performance that shook up the intermediate class pecking order at the Sachsenring. Czech Grand Prix winner Ortola took top spot on the grid with a blazing lap, beating championship leader Manuel Gonzalez by less than a tenth of a second.

González, representing the IntactGP team on home soil, managed to overtake his main title rival, Izán Guevara, who would complete the front row in third place. Guevara had set the pace on Friday with the fastest time of the day, but was unable to replicate that form in the decisive qualifying session. The gap between Gonzalez and Guevara stands at 57.5 points as the season reaches its 11th round, intensifying the battle at the top of the championship table.

Senna Agius, who has scored consecutive podium finishes in recent rounds, remains at the forefront, while David Alonso, fresh from his first win of the season at Assen, suffered a shock by qualifying only in eighth place. Alonso’s Espar teammate, Daniel Holgado, recovered from a difficult lap on Friday to finish fourth. Alex Eskridge and Taiyo Furusato, who achieved their best qualifying result of the year in seventh, will also start from promising positions. Furusato’s performance marks an important milestone in his Moto2 campaign.

The German Grand Prix also saw a rider change for the Belgian team, with Barry Baltus still out due to injury and replaced once again by Jorge Navarro.

With Ortola’s pole success, the razor-thin margin separating the top qualifiers and the major championship heroes locked together on the front row, the stage is set for a fierce showdown at the Sachsenring on Sunday. The intensity of the title battle between Gonzalez and Guevara is only set to increase, while the presence of rising talents like Agius and Alonso adds further intrigue to the unfolding Moto2 narrative.
