I’m a Trainer: My Family Aired From Lake George to the Outer Banks and Brought Us a Gym

Most family road trips involve a quiet deal: You escape your routine, but your workout routine escapes you.

I wanted to escape an open road without the familiar slide of processed snacks, stiff hips, and vaguely ambitious promises to exercise tomorrow. So I moved my family to 2026 chevrolet tahoe high countrygot married Airstream InternationalAnd drove from the Adirondack Mountains of New York to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

The plan wasn’t to turn the family getaway into a training camp. Nobody wants to wait around by the ring of fire while dad completes his fourth set of Bulgarian split squats. I wanted to find out how little equipment and time I needed to remain consistent while still being present for the reason we were traveling in the first place.

Lake George offers a more civilized way to camp

our first stop was Lake George RV ParkNestled in the Adirondack landscape just south of Lake George. Pulling into the campsite, the polished aluminum Airstream looked appropriately at home under the trees, reflecting the blue sky, pine branches and whatever family member was passing by.

Word Camping Does not fully describe the experience. This is glamping-camping for those who love nature but still want a real bed, hot shower, and working Wi-Fi. Guests have access to a heated pool, paved bike trails, pickleball and basketball courts, an adult fitness center, and hiking trails on French Mountain. Each RV site also includes water, sewer, electric service, a picnic table, and a fire ring.

The Tahoe handles family-hauling duties with three rows of seats and enough cargo room for food, clothes, outdoor gear, and a surprisingly legitimate mobile gym. The High Country’s upscale cabin also provided a welcome layer of comfort during long stretches of highway.

Chevrolet says the properly equipped Tahoe can tow up to 8,400 pounds. However, that number should not be considered as full support for every Airstream International. Trailers come in many lengths and weights, and the actual towing limit depends on the specific vehicle, trailer, passengers, cargo, hitch weight, and equipment. Carefully match the two configurations before planning the route.

Once parked, the Airstream became our base camp: part hotel room, part family dining space, and part equipment locker. With real beds, a private bathroom, and a full kitchen, roughing it mostly means stepping outside.

Lake George provided plenty of natural action. We could take a walk in the morning, ride a bike after lunch, or swim with the kids until everyone was ready to eat. But entertainment can’t completely replace strength training, especially if you’ve spent years building your week around it.

I brought several pairs of weights instead of packing REP x Pepin Fast Series Adjustable Dumbbells. Each dumbbell starts at 10 pounds and can go up to 125 pounds. This extra load matters when strength is the goal: a large systematic review and network meta-analysis Published in British Journal of Sports Medicine found that heavy resistance – more than 80 percent of a lifter’s one-rep maximum – led to the greatest strength gains. Magnetic selectors change weights rapidly, so a single pair can handle lateral raises, presses, rows, deadlifts and heavy goblet squats.

They are not lightweight travel accessories, and you need to take their weight into account when calculating the trailer’s cargo load. But they actually offer the closest you can get to a full dumbbell rack without having to haul it across state lines.

A TRX Suspension Trainer Filled in the remaining gaps. Attached to a secure anchor, it allowed me to do rows, assisted split squats, pushups, hamstring curls, and fallouts. This also disappeared into a small bag as soon as the session was over.

This 20-minute workout kept me on track

My campsite workout was intentionally simple: five movements for three rounds, eight to 12 controlled reps. A typical session includes dumbbell squats, TRX rows, dumbbell presses, TRX hamstring curls and loaded carries.

Twenty focused minutes was enough to keep the momentum going without wasting the afternoon. Working out requires almost no decisions – a huge advantage when the rest of the family is already discussing the pool, dinner or the next excursion.

Then the tools went away and YETI Hondo Beach Chair Came out. The folding chair weighs just over 11 pounds, supports up to 350, and offers four reclining positions. More importantly, it provided a comfortable place to drink something cold while the smell of dinner wafted away from the airstream.

Afterwards, I sat down on the chair and reopened Homer. odyssey– The original road-trip epic is back in the spotlight thanks to Christopher Nolan’s massive IMAX adaptation. Before we boarded our silver caravan and continued our significantly less dangerous journey towards the Outer Banks, it was worth reading.

Outer Banks turns the same workout into something new

As the Adirondacks receded behind us, dense forests gave way to long stretches of highway, and the air grew heavier as we approached the North Carolina coast. The Airstream followed with the same dumbbells, suspension trainer, and family gear to a completely different campsite.

Twiddy’s Outer Banks Camping Guide Highlights for RV travelers include OBX Campground in Kill Devil Hills and Cape Hatteras KOA in Rodanthe. Camping is not allowed directly on the beach, but many camping grounds let you close enough that you can hear the waves or reach the sound within minutes.

At Lake George, the trails naturally drew us upward. On the Outer Banks, the turbulence spread along the horizon. The morning walk became longer as there was no obvious place to turn. The soft sand made every lunge, lift and brisk step more difficult, while swimming and paddling offered conditioning that felt nothing like a prescribed cardio session.

I could complete a short strength workout next to the Airstream, pack up equipment, and be near the water before the heat increased. Later, as the sky changed color and the wind blew out to sea, the YETI chair came out.

This was the real benefit of the mobile setup: The workout remained consistent, but the experience never felt repetitive. Pack versatile gear, take brief training and let the destination dictate how you proceed.
