Mercedes arrive at the Hungaroring this weekend in strong form, but the battle for supremacy at Formula 1’s “quiet gem” promises to be anything but straightforward. As the Hungarian Grand Prix approaches, all eyes are on whether the Silver Arrows can once again beat Ferrari and Red Bull at a circuit notorious for its unique challenges and unpredictable results.
The tricky, technical nature of the Hungaroring, combined with its hot and dusty conditions, often makes racing mentally difficult for drivers and engineers. Despite lacking the direct spectacle of some classic venues, the circuit remains a fan favourite, filled with moments of history and championship drama since its debut in 1986. Its unchanged layout has seen debut victories, title-winning performances and seismic shifts in the careers of many drivers.
Recent form shows that Mercedes have the upper hand. The team’s package has demonstrated its versatility on circuits with heavy braking zones and slow corners, notably victories at Monaco and Austria. Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s victory in Monaco and George Russell’s victory in Austria have strengthened Mercedes’ credibility. In Austria, Mercedes finished first and third, while Ferrari, after a promising qualifying, faded dramatically and was overtaken by both Red Bull and McLaren, losing significant positions to the leaders.
However, Ferrari remains an unpredictable entity. The SF-26 showed flashes of brilliance, with Charles Leclerc overcoming his challenges with the car to win at Silverstone and finish second in Belgium. However, the Scuderia’s power unit continues to lag behind that of Mercedes, leaving Ferrari more of a lurking horse than a sprinting one. Lewis Hamilton’s strong performance has also kept Mercedes on high alert, which has not created any sense of complacency within the team.
Red Bull cannot be discounted, especially with Max Verstappen’s proven record in Hungary. The team’s in-house power unit could prove decisive, especially if the power of the combustion engine is not constrained by the battery – an area where Mercedes currently holds the lead. Verstappen’s resilient third place at Spa has rekindled hope within the Milton Keynes camp, as the team seeks off-track stability amid continued speculation about Verstappen’s future.
For George Russell, the stakes are personal. After being taken out by Hamilton on the opening lap at Les Combes in the previous round, Russell will be desperate to deliver a stellar performance and return to the title race. Mercedes’ qualifying performance will be crucial; Last season, Charles Leclerc shocked the grid by snatching pole in a struggling Ferrari, underlining the unpredictable nature of the Hungaroring.
The midfield battles are set to be intense, with Racing Bulls likely to duel with Alpine, while Audi’s impressive chassis and recent points in Belgium suggest a potential breakthrough. Meanwhile, Aston Martin hopes the upgraded AMR26 and an impending engine update will lift it from the tail end of the field after a disappointing performance in Belgium, where it escaped the 107 percent rule and was comprehensively beaten by Cadillac.
As the Hungarian Grand Prix begins, the stage is set for action on one of Formula 1’s lowest-rated circuits. With Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull all competing for supremacy, and the midfield set for upheaval, the only certainty is that Budapest will once again offer intrigue, tension and possibly another decisive chapter in the 2024 season.
